Martin Thus Far..

3 years from now Martin will be gone - and then we will realize we paid 1.3 mil a year for a guy to fall asleep at press conferences(see luncheon press conference). I have no problem with Bruce Pearl firing, but hire someone that is going to take the program to the next level, not some guy just because he is the opposite of Pearl. For better or worse, at least people were talking about UT basketball for the first time in 30 years...I personally didn't give a crap about the stupid lying he committed, much worse has been done at other programs. If you have any questions about Martin see Wade Houston circa 1991 because that is going to be our record this year, hope that works for everyone.

Racist imo.

Martin/Houston = Reediculous comparison unless of course you're just a racist.

Ok, substitute Buzz Peterson record in any year for Houston. Doesn't matter to me, but watching the luncheon press conference with Martin's personality reminds me of Houston's Nonchalant attitude. i.e. we are losing, but everything is fine and we are really making strides. As I already said, give us someone like Shaka Smart with some spunk who is going to promote the program. The coach can be a midget Chinese lesbian for all I care, just give us someone that isn't going to fall asleep during a press conference.

Good report Calban, thanks! I definitely agree that they have shown a lot of heart in coming back from large deficits, but in the end results will say everything about the team, and if we don't make the tournament for the first time in years who cares about the effort. I completely disagree about defensive effort - with exception of Pitt game UT looked really bad on defense. If you are going to play man on man defense your team better know how to handle a pick and roll, and which player takes the guy with the ball. 7 games in and the team doesn't know how to handle a simple screen which has left other teams wide open every game. IMO, Martin will have to recruit on the level with Kentucky to have a shot of running his scheme and still compete at the top of the SEC.
MGV. I agree we've shown deficiencies in defense in the first 7 games. I also think that anyone who believes Pearl wouldn't have struggled with this team early is living in a dream world.
These guys have been playing together as a unit for 7 games. Individual performance has improved a lot from last year. The problems you're discussing will disappear as the players come together as a team and learn to know and trust each other in game situations.
If Martin should by some stroke of fortune land Stokes this year and one or 2 of the players they're going after in the 013 class, look out. I agree that recruiting is the key to the future.

Personally, I like Martin's laid back approach.
Contrast that to Dooley, who spent the year telling everyone how bad his team was. And they played just like he described them. A bad football team.

Martin's approach is the opposite. Praise them for the good the do and they'll continue to play hard and improve.

This team was picked by the same "experts" that say Smart is a slam-dunk hire as 11th in the pitiful SEC. Even if we've lost games, we're obviously very close to being successful and aren't getting blown out like an 11th placed team would. If Pearl had known that the roster would have been the way it was, he wouldn't have put this schedule together, and the end result would have been more wins to give our team confidence before getting into SEC play. You still would have seen us play some top teams, but it wouldn't be as brutal in the preseason as it is now.

In the 05-06 season we played Texas, Ok State, and Memphis on the road with a better roster. This year, with a roster that has hardly any experience, we have or will be playing Duke, Memphis, at Oakland, Pitt, at Charleston, at Memphis, and then wrap it up by playing the defending national champions UConn.

It's just not fair to Martin to compare him to Pearl's first year when the situations they stepped into are completely different.

Good points! IMO, I think Pearl would have struggled as well but hard to tell because he may have picked up some better recruits than Martin. I think he was a little stronger X and Os coach so probably would have won 1 of the games we lost...but who knows. I guess it is a matter of what you prefer, I actually like Dooley because he says exactly what is on his mind...if a player doesn't like what he is saying then play better - as a fan I would much rather hear Spurrier or Dooley approach than Fulmer. Only thing I ever got out of Fulmer's conference was we will will try like heck. So I guess that is why I prefer a promoter over layed back approach of Martin. I wouldn't be expecting Martin to appear in ESPN PTI anytime soon.

Can you explain this? Last time I looked Shaka Smart was still coaching a VCU team that went to the final four last year..far cry from 11th place SEC team. I may not understand what you are saying. Personally, if you have a chance to get a guy that takes VCU to final four, throw 2.5 mil his way because surely he can do similar things at UT.

What I was saying is that the same media experts that said Smart would have been a sure fire success at UT or any other major DI job predicted UT to be one of the worst teams in the SEC. However, the main part of what I said is that it's unfair to compare Pearl and Martin at this point based on the two being in completely different situations. There are plenty of coaches that give boring press conferences and they do just fine. The only reason that fans like yourself want something different is because you got used to it with Pearl for the past 6 years.

You probably need to look at what VCU is doing this year before getting too carried away by a freak, luck one year tournament run.

You are right, I am used to someone with Pearl's personality and like that, but what I really like is a coach that can get success no matter what the make-up of the team is that year. And I rest my case after today against Austin Peay because UT is one of the worst teams in SEC.

VCU has not had a great start, but I would be willing to bet they end up with more than 20 wins and a tournament bid. Do you think UT will after a ridiculous loss against Austin Peay?

I'm just ready to quit playing top 25 ranked teams for a few weeks. Hard to catch a breath when, every time you turn around, you are playing a legit tourney team. Need to get some wins, gain some confidence, and get some good practice in before we have another test like we've already had.

Yeah I know...Oakland and AP...cant wait to to see them in tourney.

I'll bet this loss made your day.
I'm happy for you.
