Marvelous SEC Refs

You cannot blame the bad shooting percentages in yesterday's loss on the referees.

Tennessee has played the three best defenses in the country in Arkansas, Texas and Texas Tech this season and have scored less than 55 points in all three losses.

To me, that is the flaw. Those are not good basketball defenses. Those are teams that are taught to foul multiple times on every possession and bet on the refs assimilating to their style of play and allowing it. It isn't basketball and the refs and conferences are too cowardly to enforce the rules because there is a whole school of basketball coaches who teach synchronized mugging as defense and they are praised for it.

Barnes stresses defense, but doesn't teach the guys to foul every play. Yeah, I know, you have to take advantage of what they give you and adapt to the game. While that might be true in order to win, it still doesn't make what they are doing either basketball or good defense.

Refs should absolutely have to answer post game and they should be publicly fined and disciplined. Coaches should be allowed to criticize refs and should sue the conference office when fines are attempted. I would not be surprised if protection of bad refs isn't eventually what tears the SEC apart.

Rhythm and flow can have a huge impact on shooting. As can fear from wondering if every time you make a move or attempt a shot you’re going to be called offensively for something.

Yes. I know that TN has to make shots to win games. But right now it feels like the refs TOOK AWAY a second SEC regular season championship in 4 years.

I don’t know if I’ve ever seen as worse call than the Arkansas running out of bounds 3 steps and then throwing the ball off of TN.

Jimmy's blog: Refs take 'charge' as Vols fall at Arkansas

Greg Sankey Inc. in a nutshel. While Finebaum, Low, and other media hacks blow the guy his legacy will be pathetic officiating in the league’s two major sports.

I will say this Willams is really good at keeping his whole body straight and moving under a player that's left his feet. He has perfected this nuanced move and the older refs just can't pick it up the game is too fast for some. I think he is the leader in drawing charges. Vescovi did the same thing timing-wise but if you look at the replay Vescovi leans his body and bends slightly at the waist which shows up to the human eye. Vescovi's & Willams both should have been called for a foul Vescovi was, Willams, pulled it off 3 times which he should have got the fouls but we got the charging foul costing players sitting and taking points off the board., and maybe getting into players heads about taking it to the hoop. These missed calls are game-changing on so many levels.

Live I thought that Vescovi had forced a charge against the Arkansas offense and I was screaming at the TV. But from the replay it looked like he was leaning and that the call was correct.

Williams does have it perfected.

It’s just as bad in college football, if not worse.

It’s taking away the flow and excitement of the game.

I understand home court advantage will always receive more calls than the visiting team, but it’s impacting the outcome way more than people think.
Not to mention the Super Bowl. No flags the entire game then they start flying with 3 min left and the Rams on the goal line. Must have been too much betting on the Bengals

Not as bad as last night, but the SC/Lady Vols game today was annoying, too. Refs blew whistles on every possession it seemed. When they insert themselves too much in a game, then it is an obvious problem. I hope the blatant bad calls in the Arkansas game changes things-- way too many people were watching and noticed.

Whenever I think that it can’t get any worse, officiating like yesterday happens.

TV Teddy is annoying with his showboating, but he’s never been that bad.

Doug Shows. Pat Adams. They don’t seem nearly so bad.

Pat Adams is bad. But he and Teddy V are very similar in that they want to be part of the entertainment.

Pat Adams threw out a radio guy in a mid major tournament a few years ago. The guy was eventually allowed back because he explained he talks with his hands and wasn’t trying to show him up. But the fact that Adams even cared or paid attention to that is a serious ego problem.

With a conference so flush with cash and successful programs in all sports, schools from other conferences are beating the door down to get in, you would think member institutions and their boosters and fans would expect more from the conference and its officiating crews in terms of consistency, accuracy and leadership in the officiating industry across the country, but no, we get this on the cheap crap, allowing referees to call games in other conferences, cheapening and cheating what should be an integral part of the leading collegiate conference in America.

SEC knows what it's doing. They're trying to get as many teams in the tourney as they can. A win over a tennessee team that beat Arizona and Kentucky would carry a lot of weight

I might be in the minority, but I think Shows is a good ref. Adams is bad. Greene has no idea what he’s doing.

Of those three, Shows is definitely the best. Adams and Greene are two of the worst in the SEC that continually remain employed. Steven Anderson is awful, too.

Don Rutledge and the Smith brothers could trigger the older fellers posting on VN.

John Clougherty is another PIA from the past.

LOL. Don Rutledge is on Facebook. And he’s a Gator.

I agree. But that's also like saying between Harry Dunn and Lloyd Christmas, Lloyd was the least dumberest.

Green is a cocky POS who sucks. Adams is too. Shows just sucks

Until refs are required to answer to the press post-game like players, nothing will change. Nothing. It’s a simple fix that commissioners across the sport are too cowardly to implement.

If an 18-year old kid has to answer questions about his own flaws and how his performance may have lost a game, I see no reason why grown men shouldn’t be held to the same standard.
Wow this 100% !!!!!

I rarely complain about officiating, but that was a pretty poor performance, and seemed to be going Arkansas way most of the game. I had to explain the term 'home cooking' to my SO

Watch what happens when they come here next weekend. They'll call blocking fouls on Williams. The Vols probably run them out of the gym.
