He had highest plus/minus for the game and defensively completely shut down Shannon. His offense isn't great but what he brings defensively is next level. Anytime vols play team with elite wings like Illinois he should be playing 20 min a game.

Where do you go to get the +/- stats?

His play turned the tide in the second half. He was so disruptive that it threw Illinois completely out of rhythm for a 3-4 minute stretch where we extended our lead

Overall, I don’t know, but that’s an interesting question.
Well I just did the numbers from our toughest 6 games…
Kansas-Purdue-Wisconsin-Syracuse-UNC-Illinois
I was surprised by the 1st & last place guys among our top 8 guys.
Aidoo +20
JJJ +18
Tobe +17
Knect +11
Santi + 6
Gainey + 5
ZZ -12
Shack -14

Plus/minus can be very misleading and has fallen out of favor as an evaluation tool...you are analyzing a specific player when you use plus/minus, yet the stat is heavily dependent on what the other 4 guys on the floor are doing.

Possibly but over a longer/larger sample size (6 games in this case) it would seem to have some merit.

Without looking at the box score, Mashack and ZZ seemed to be the only Vols capable of hitting both free throws when shooting 2 of them. At least there weren’t a lot of 0-2s versus Illinois - but it seemed liked the rest of the team was only making one of two. While Illinois made something like 22 of their first 26. They shouldn’t have been able to hang around nearly the entire game.

Good work. Interesting. I always remind myself this stat is not the end all-be-all. If you were Doug Ashworth playing heavy minutes with Ernie and Bernie, your + would be sky high. I look at these after each game and sometimes the numbers just don’t make sense. Mostly they match up fairly well, but not always.

I kept track the final 8 minutes or so and, at one point, we were barely above 50% but we finished 12 of 17 which is still not great but we started shooting a bit better late in the game thanks in large part to ZZ

Illinois came into the game hitting 62.2% of their free throws, and hit 24-28 on the night, for right at 86%. According to “history” they should have hit 7 less than they made.

Tennessee came in at 76.2 % and winds up the night hitting 76.5%. Started out pretty slowly but came around in the end.

Go figure….it’s college basketball.

I feel like you’re underselling his offense. He doesn’t shoot a ton, but when he does, he’s often creating his own in a late-clock situation. He’s a great offensive rebounder and he puts in time bringing the ball up on occasion as well. He’s not the liability he was on offense previously and on a lesser team, he’d probably have more of a green light to score.

Interesting that all the IL players were negative in the +/- except for two who had 0.
Yeah I noticed that also
I’m not sure how good of a tool +/- is especially for one game if at all.
For example Illinois’ Shannon and Guerrier had good games on both ends but they were -10 & -5. 🤷🏻

I agree. I just don’t know if it’s a great way to measure someone’s efficiency. Especially for one game. I do think that it may work better to measure a groups effort tho.
For example what is the +/- of
ZZ-Santi-JJJ-Knect-Aidoo compared to Mashack-Gainey-Santi-JJJ-Tobe or Santi-JJJ-Knect-Tobe-Aidoo?
I would find these results more interesting per game and especially over a larger sample size.

Agree, and feel like he’s a really good fit for this team. We have enough offensive weapons that he just needs to play within himself on that end of the floor. Would like to see him drive and kick a little more though, as he’s maybe our best player at getting into the lane.

I agree there’s more offensive potential than we have seen
