Mashack still isn’t a great offensive player

He’s shown the ability/willingness to dribble drive into the paint and has the size / athleticism to finish around the rim. Right now he’s the only one playing who is doing this and it’s sorely needed. Hope he continues his strong play and earns his minutes!

And you saying it's not fine doesn't mean it isn't. Sorry.
And you saying that he’s saying it’s not fine doesn’t mean it isn’t doesn’t mean that it is.

I guess that means that now me saying that you saying he’s saying it’s not fine doesn’t mean it isn’t doesn’t mean it is clearly doesn’t mean that it isn’t. Never mind, I’m lost. What are we taking about?

Mashack is pretty much the only one on the team that can actually attack the basket and finish inside. Phillips certainly can, but he just goes AWOL on offense as well, and does a good amount of his damage just getting offensive rebounds. If we can get both of those two guys to stay aggressive and attack the basket, then our offense will be much better off. There's also no drop off defensively when either one are on the court.

Which comes down to the age old question, whose minutes get cut once everyone is healthy. I am starting to lean towards Tyreke Key. Think about it, Mashack is so much better on defense, that his relative lack of offense (which is picking up as of late), is still more valuable then what Key brings. In theory Key can shoot, but that's just clearly not consistent.

I thought Josiah looked pretty darn good at SF today, and it is pretty hard to keep Awaka off the floor. If it is me, I'm giving Key like 10 minutes a game, just to spell ZZ and see if Key is hot that day. Outside of that, I want Mashack playing the minutes that Key was playing.

So to me it goes
ZZ/Key
Santi/Mashack
Phillips/JJJ
ON/Awaka
Aidoo/Uros

and obviously they'll mix and match, will probably still play Mashack minutes at the 3, and Josiah minutes at the 4, as they should. I think Josiah has almost been better off the bench anyway. He's not quite as efficient, but his assists, blocks, and steals are noticeably higher.

Plus earlier in the season Barnes and Madshack were interviewed talking about how they changed his shot motion so it was a matter of him getting comfortable and more confident in game action and I think we saw that yesterday! I was very harsh on him earlier but maybe it is starting to click for him! If he can develop consistency, this will be huge for this team because of his slashing ability. JJJ used to be able to it more but his injuries have clearly slowed him down. Phillips will also be able to do it, but hasn’t quite figured it out yet as a freshman. Not dunking that ball at Vandy should help him for a very long time!

I totally agree with this lineup rotation, Key needs to be a 1/2 sub and nothing more at this point until he improves, and who knows about his ankle? Getting JJJ back improves offensive flow and I think TK slows it down.

To the other posters, JM’s aggression is definitely needed! Yesterday he gave the dawg energy on both sides we expect from ZZ.

The thread title is fine.

I wish the rest of the team would play with the same offensive tenacity as consistently as Mashack does. If the first six did that, we would undoubtedly have at least 3 less losses imo. Mashack is going to be great if he continues finding his offense.
I thought the offense looked really good yesterday. It was really good to see JJJ back to his normal play.
The defense also was played pretty good.

Confidence is probably the biggest factor for Mashack, getting the minutes he got with JJJ and Phillips being injured. Be interesting to see his development going forward.

A month ago I was worried that he was a strong candidate to transfer before next season. Now he’s looking like a very important part of TN’s team for the next couple of years.

Mashack has bought in. In fact, he bought in pretty early last year. I think he is putting in the work and trusts this staff to develop him.

Mashack was bringing the ball up court a lot last night. But of course, it was USCjr defending it.

Some have compared him to Stanley Asumnu. That comp fails because (a) Asumnu’s handle was nowhere near Mashack’s. The thought of SA bringing the ball up court against anyone is absurd. In fact, he could lose his dribble with no one guarding him on breakaways, and (b) Asumnu never had the offensive upside that JM has. Both are/were very athletic and high energy guys, but the comp ends there.

I think the Richardson comp is the best one.
