McCain and the politics of mortality - Alexander Burns - Politico.com

...for a man who has lived 72 years and 67 days (McCain’s age on Election Day this year), there is between a 14.2 and 15.1 percent chance of dying before Inauguration Day 2013, according to the Social Security Administration’s 2004 actuarial tables and the authoritative 2001 mortality statistics assembled by the National Association of Insurance Commissioners.

Going by the Social Security Administration’s tables, that’s nearly ten times the likelihood that a man aged 47 years and 92 days (Barack Obama’s age on Election Day this year) will die before Jan. 20, 2013.

Wish I could say I'm surprised to see this type of story, but it's a relevant issue when you're talking about a 72 year old president with a history of cancer -- especially since he just chose the most inexperienced vice-presidential nominee in the history of either major party.

Again, how far does your history go back?

That statement is asinine.

In your opinion, we should limit the office of president to non state executives, limit them to a certain age group and have no history of health problems?

Well the VP who would become president has more executive experience than either of the men running on the opposite ticket.

So...just by electing a democratic ticket, the American public should be even more afraid than the prospect of an early passing of McCain.

Because that's a relevant issue when you're talking about a 47 year old president with a history of no experience.

Trivia question: when was the last time a major party chose a sitting governor as it's vice-presidential nominee? Seriously, does anybody know?

why are you freaking out about a VP? Holy mother of all that is good, your Pres. candidate is pathetic.

These life expectancy arguments are weak. Suppose Obama has a heart attack, and McCain lives to be 100....then what?

What if I can go out and statistically prove that those whose last names start with vowels are 25% more likely to be racist than those whose last names start with consonants?

I agree that Obama is the probably the most inexperienced presidential candidate in my lifetime. That's not surprising considering he is only 47 years old. He was very smart to pick a Washington veteran like Joe Biden in the event he were unable to fulfill his duties. I wish John McCain had been that smart -- considering he is the one most likely to have his VP need to step in.

Obama used to smoke (or perhaps he still does). Due to the global warming caused by Bush aggravating and exacerbating lung conditions all over the world, I'd say Obama has a better than 50% chance of developing anthropogenic lung cancer and coughing himself to death withing the projected 10 years of his Presidency.

were you this concerned over John Edwards as Kerry's VP? He has less experience than Palin.

He was a US Senator of the 9th largest state in the union. He had over 8 million constituents. Besides, Kerry did not have nearly the same health risks that McCain does. McCain will be the oldest president elected to a first term. And he has a history of skin cancer. I'd say his VP is very important. Are you all really happy with his potential replacement? Don't you think Romney or Ridge or Lieberman would be better?
