"The Republican standard-bearer wasn't breaking new ground with the unemployment and capitol gains proposals. He was a day behind Obama in suggesting that taxes on jobless benefits be suspended, and Obama also proposed extending the duration of those benefits. And Republicans for years have offered proposals to reduce the tax on capital gains from investments."

McCain proposes $52.5 billion economic plan - Yahoo! News

does his camp think this move will make a dent in his gap in the polls?

So he shouldn't propose a plan?

His advisors live in a fantasy world.........

If Obama some how loses......... bless your little democratic hearts because that is sad.

So he shouldn't propose a plan?

If you're down by 3 touchdowns with 5 min. to play, do you punt?

doesn't he need to take a risk? do something sorta bizarre just to try to force obama off his gameplan?

And then be accused of being erratic? Of course he should propose the plan he thinks is best, not just some gimmick to win the election.

Put another way, an economic plan is not the place to do something bizarre in an attempt to win.

McCain's economic plan is punting and playing a prevent defense against a goaline offensive formation.

he's already got the erratic label - no getting around that. so why not turn it into "innovative" and embrace it? And do it in every proposal he makes, economic or otherwise?

i have no idea what that actual solution would be - perhaps some crazy incentives for businesses to create jobs. what if he proposed this idea with the backing of not only his current advisors from the business community (Fiorina, Whitman, etc.), but also the likes of Michael Bloomberg and Boone Pickens?

What if he proposed a flat tax on consumption and cut federal taxes in half (making up the numbers, obviously)? Doesn't he need to do something bold like that? couple it with a new proposal regarding spending, balanced budgets, term limits, etc., and then you start to see a man with a vision.

wouldn't that really signal "change"?

That it is............. but it will not happen because he does not believe in any of that. He is pro government.

that's my point - why spend time and money and mindshare putting out a plan that mirrors your opponent's in many ways (a plan, btw, that was put out before yours)? what good does that do him?

Do exactly what you last paragraph describes......

He needs to wage war against the federal government, but he will not because that is what he is at his core.

I disagree with the do something sensational to win approach if that something sensational is an off-the-cuff, ill-formed plan. Call me crazy but I'd hope they plan to do what they think is at least somewhat close to the right thing.

I don't see how McCain can win unless he does something dramatic in this final debate. I don't know what that might be but what else can he do to turn the election around? He is running out of time and Obama has a lot more money to spend.

do any elected officials actually ever follow through on their promises anyway? the public can never see through this for some reason.

Would dropping Sarah Palin be the right thing? Seriously. It would be a ballsy move, and it would definitely shake up the race.

I would vote for McCain if he dropped Palin and picked up David Walker, who is . . . THE MAN!

That is one of the best points I've heard in a while. These guys say whatever they need to get elected. Case in point -- McCain says he's for cutting spending, yet he voted for the $700B Paulson plan. LO-freaking-L.

He isn't any of those things.

:hi:

I don't think we're talking about the same person. Former Comptroller General of the U.S., whose mission is to cut government waste, balance the budget, thus preventing America from becoming owned by the Chinese? Are you a socialist all of a sudden?
