Mel Tucker extension

Just crazy... and it keeps happening over and over again. Same thing Notre Dame did with Charlie Weis and Ty Willingham. They win a few games and the boosters' egos convince themselves that they've made the greatest hire ever and nobody could ever do the job as well. Good for him, but I swear I don't understand how Athletic Departments continuously let themselves get taken to the cleaners.

Remember not too long ago when Covid was supposedly wiping out all of these non revenue sports? I guess that’s not really a thing anymore.

I have never really cared for any big ten team but I do find myself rooting for MICH ST in the majority of the games they play. I have always like Tom Izzo as a BB coach so that is most likely why I pull for their football team. I also hate MICH and Ohio State. A lot of people in this thread probably feel this wasn’t a smart move giving Mel an extension like this however it could turn out to be a wise investment long term. Tucker has MSU in the top ten and fringe playoff contender in his second year (they should be ahead of MICH). It is possible that Harbaugh and Day have peaked with MICH and Ohio State. There is an opportunity for Tucker to have one of the premier teams in that league on a regular basis. We already have evidence that he can flat out coach. The Spartans have locked him up so Kudos to them for being proactive. Did they overpay? Yes, but that is the trend nowadays. If they didn’t another big time program would have hired him away eventually.

Ultimately it boils down to agents (professional negotiators well-trained and experienced in the art of dealmaking) taking athletic directors (most of which are bureaucratic, admin-oriented people) to the cleaners. ADs are so out of their element in situations like that, and there is tremendous pressure to win.

However, I don't care how inept of a dealmaker you are...the one thing I still do not really understand are the buyouts. I get that coaches have very low job security and some kind of buyout is reasonable. However, you also have instances where Auburn fully guaranteed Gus's contract extension, which was earned basically on the basis of 2 games in the 2017 season. Jimbo's A&M contract is fully guaranteed.

I don't care how "driven to win" somebody is...if your employer is going to pay you $75m no matter what, regardless of performance, that is absolutely going to affect how hard you work. It can't not affect it. What is in it for the school at that point if you fully guarantee the contract? If my employer guaranteed a fat salary for the next 7 years and the only way to not get it was to commit some sort of gross misconduct or quit...I think of myself as a hard-worker who wants to do well, but it absolutely would impact how I worked. If they didn't like how I was doing, they could just fire me and I'd collect my buyout.

If they can't work on bringing the buyouts down in a meaningful way, ADs have got to work on making these contracts more incentive-laden. A coach that wins a national title is worth every bit of $10m that season. Give them the opportunity to make that, but through incentives. I'd have no problem with Josh Heupel making $10m net year if he won a national title. Pay these guys a reasonable base salary, and give them the chance to be the highest paid coach in the country any given year by winning hardware.

Man it is looking like a tough day for MSU... down 21 and a fumble again. Bad way to start a new era type contract. Maybe they can turn this around but OSU is not going to help.

Doesn’t matter. When you’re getting paid like that you aren’t expected to get beat like a division 3 team by anyone.

Urban Meyer got road graded by an unranked Perdue. Using one game as a defense for MSU making a bad decision is kind of silly. OSU has the best offense in CF along with the likely Heisman winner.

Michigan State has played the weakest schedule in the Big 10 by far when they got into the top 10. They were very overrated along with the rest of the Big 10 outside of Ohio State. Michigan will get it like this next week too.

Hit me up when Mel Tucker has Urban’s success. I won’t hold my breath.

MSU just tied an anchor around their football program.

Michigan State starting quarterback Payton Thorne and last year’s leading wide receiver Keon Coleman both entered the portal today. That fully guaranteed $95 million that Tucker looking like a great decision on State’s part.
... and they did this on the heels of the $500 million settlement with Larry Nassar's victims. That school has written some fat checks lately.
