Penny can recruit, motivating and coaching might be a bit more of a challenge for him, Arkansas and Ole Miss have the opportunity to recruit well in Memphis and from time the Memphis kids will roll out to a random place like Duke, Georgia Tech or Colorado, the nature of that conference they play in requires a stellar season or it is NIT only
Hardaway is a terrible game coach. He had an NBA lotter pick, 6'11' James Wiseman and all of the best talent in Memphis and still got blown out in the state tournament game by a Knoxville Bearden HS team that didn't have a player over 6'5"
They have ZERO choice but to be patient. That was the quandary they were in when they hired an AAU coach. They basically had no other choice but to hire him when he was hired. Once he said I’m interested in the job the pressure was so strong any other hire would have caused a riot. Let’s wait and see but the clock is clicking for sure. The conference they play in plus the rise of programs like Ole Miss, Arkansas, Tennessee and Missouri and others recruiting so well will make the road much harder to make the tourney nowadays. No, they will be patient. He inherited a bit of a mess, and they are much closer to the tournament now than they have been in the last 6 years under Pastner and Tubby.
Eh, facts are a little skewed on this. I am not going to vouch for Penny's in-game coaching because that is his weakness. However, there was really only one other "blue-chip" recruit on that roster (Chandler Lawson), and Penny didn't even want him at Memphis. He ended up barely top 100. Lomax and Dandridge were not top 100. East had won the three prior state titles, including beating Bearden the year before in the semifinals.
Drew Pember is taller than 6"5". Wiseman had 22, 11, and 5 blocks in that game.

Forgot about Pember but he was the 3rd best player on that Bearden team. However, he played very well in that one. DIdnt know that about Lomax, he was highly touted at the time. Where did he end up playing college ball? Saw East play the year before too. They were the best team that year because of the 2 or 3 brothers (all over 6'8") who transferred after that season. East was loaded with talent that year.
Lomax went to Memphis with Penny. He was committed to Wichita State but changed to Memphis when Penny took the job. He is a solid yet not dynamic point guard. Averaged 6 points, 4.4 assists, and 3 rebounds this year but was hurt the last couple of weeks.
Who were the brothers on who played at East the year before Wiseman's Sr year. I think there were 3 of them and they were all 6'8" +. Their Dad took a coaching job at an A or AA school in Memphis and all 3 transferred and they won the state title in their division the next year.
My guess is you are talking about the Lawson brothers- KJ, Dedric, Chandler, and Johnathan. Their dad coached at Hamilton, and the older brothers, KJ and Dedric, won a state title there. But that was in 2015. Both played at Memphis as their dad was offered a position on staff. But Tubby Smith did not retain their Dad, so they both transferred to Kansas.
Chandler and Johnathan (as a freshman) played on Penny’s East team, but Penny didn’t really aggressively recruit either to Memphis. Chandler is at Oregon, and Johnathan is committed to Oregon. Johnathan transfered to Houston High School, which just won the state title with Mike Miller’s son. Houston is my alma mater.
Checked Chandler's bio on Oregon site. He and his brother transferred to Memphis Woodale HS before Wiseman's Sr year. I think his Dad accepted the coaching position there that year which allowed them to transfer there. They won the State Tournament in A or AA and East finished runner up in AAA that year..
I've watched several of the NIT games and can't say I've seen any that didn't want to be there....Think them cutting down the field has made it more competitive. Been some good games. The NIT is clearly not equal to the NCAA tournament but if you make it to the finals it is good exposure for the team and extra games.
