Mendenhall To Virginia

I never foresaw him leaving BYU and especially not for the East Coast. Hell of a hire from X&O's standpoint. Recruiting and relationships will be the only question mark.

Sometimes a fresh start is good for both parties. If Fulmer and done this in 2003, we'd both be better off.

UVA just got a legit hire. VT did also. And Miami. ACC as a conference should be improving vastly the next couple years.

I'd say he's frustrated with several things at BYU. They tried to pull a Notre Dame and go independent and that hasn't worked out so well. Despite winning 9 games, the whole program just had that train wreck feel all season. They played a bunch of cupcakes and got beat by the only 3 mediocre teams on their schedule.

I'm shocked. Wasn't BYU his alma mater?

Maybe he felt he had hit the ceiling there.

I had just looked up the same thing a little bit ago once I saw he's going to Virginia. Oregon State was his alma mater. And Kyle Whittingham coaches Utah but BYU is his alma mater. Maybe BYU should pony up 3.25 and try to steal Whittingham. He's making 2 mil at Utah. In which case, too bad Gary Andersen didn't hold off on going to Oregon State since his alma mater is Utah.

If they had done it correctly and Andersen stayed at Wisconsin so Bronco could go to Oregon State. Then BYU took Whittingham from Utah and Utah took Gary Andersen from Wisconsin.

BYU - Whittingham(currently vacant)
Oregon State - Mendenhall(current coach Andersen)
Utah - Andersen(current coach Whittingham)

That would be their rightful alma maters. Now that Bronco has taken the Virginia job. A guy who was born in Utah, went to college at Oregon State and spent his entire head coaching career at BYU takes a job to go opposite side of the country after his whole life when I'm sure there have been times he has had better offers than Virginia, makes me wonder when Kyle Whittingham is leaving. Maybe even Gary Patterson.

Bronco just got 3.25 from Virginia while Whittingham is only making 2 at Utah. He's done a good job building Utah back up in the Pac 12 after their move from the Mountain West. Gary Patterson had to do the same thinking after moving from the Mountain West to the Big 12. Even TCU is paying him 3 million at least. Whittingham is a sitting duck with a salary of only 2 million. In the end Utah I'm sure would be willing to match in an attempt to keep him but there are many schools that if they're willing to offer 3 or more, they should. It worked for Virginia although I don't know what Bronco was making at BYU.

WOW! I had Miami down as the biggest winner in this years coaching carousel, now, it's clearly Virginia. Huge get for them.

Yeah the hire is a good one. My thoughts were similar to an earlier poster. I think the feeling of being an independent is tough on a competitive coaches mindset. They are geared to win something important. You never get those years to say we won a conference title so no rings. And while Virginia isnt the school with the most traditionally. The ACC is easy enough that he can get good players with plenty of in staters and get in the ACC title game once in awhile. Also Virginia doesn't have huge expectations at this point so its not like he would be expected to produce immediately or be out. Thats why I think Chris Peterson took his route. He would never get in the playoff at Boise. And all the bigger schools expectations like USC are so high that line between success and failure is small. Whereas at Washington like Virginia you win 7-9 games youll be good.

If playing for a c'ship is important, BYU being an independent not named Notre Dame is probably why he makes this move.

I would not be surprised if Gary Anderson jumps from Oregon State to take the BYU job. It will be him or Utah state's coach IMO.

If they didn't already know, BYU just got told where they are in the CFB pecking order, meaning they aren't going sniff a playoff bid anytime soon. Staying in the MWC wasn't going to help but if they are wanting to be a serious football school, they need to convince a P5 conference to invite them in, and I'm not sure that's going to happen.

Wouldn't the Big XII and BYU make perfect sense? It does to me.

Most telling part of the article as far as the REASON a devout Mormon abandons the flagship Mormon university...and about b******* in general (Negavols!)

Matt: I think there was a certain segment of BYU fans who looked at Mendenhall like, say, Nebraska fans did towards Bo Pelini or Georgia fans did towards Mark Richt. "We like the guy, but can he get us better?" After every loss against a Power 5 program or dip outside the Also Receiving Votes section of the AP Poll, you'd find people clamoring for his firing, but I don't think that represented the majority of BYU's fans.

If the Big 12 is looking to go to 12 teams and a championship game, bringing BYU as a football only school makes sense. They would never be a full member as they don't play sports on Sundays. Maybe bring Wichita state for basketball.

IMO, this is the move they should have made several years ago in realignment. Bring Louisville, West Virginia, and BYU football /Notre Dame everything else. Not sure Notre Dame would have signed up, but they should have at least tried.

Big 12 offered a few years back but BYU has rule to play in no sport on sundays. Big 12 said we dont just want you in football. We need all and you must play our schedule. To BYUs credit they didnt break their moral clause. However it has cost their football program dearly.

I wouldn't call UCLA and Michigan mediocre

Big 12 wants full members, hence BYU will never get a football only invite.

Trying to watch the press conference. Audio is deplorable, can't hear a thing. Now that's big-time football.
