When
Lorenzo McCaskill recently added his name to the NCAA transfer portal, he didn’t know what types of programs might be interested in him. Less than a week later, he’s already being pursued by a few Power Five schools.
Tennessee on Thursday became the latest major program to join the race for McCaskill, a senior linebacker at Louisiana. He said he’s now planning to visit the Vols in the coming months as he prepares to decide on a college by the end of the spring going into his final season of eligibility.
The 6-foot, 226-pound McCaskill, who was Louisiana’s leading tackler each of the past two seasons, already has received scholarship offers from Missouri, Southern Cal and Miami (Ohio) in addition to Tennessee since entering the transfer portal on Friday. He said he expects the Vols, Texas and Missouri to host him on official visits over the next few months.
“I guess with this new thing, with entering the portal, you don’t really ever know how it can go,” McCaskill told GoVols247. “I know I’ve put in work these last few years I’ve been in college to try to put myself in position. But you don’t ever really know how it’s going to go.
“I’m definitely blessed and surprised with some schools, because some of these schools I never knew even had interest in me. But it’s a blessing that I’ve got the opportunity, that they want me to come to their program.”
McCaskill said he spoke with Tennessee linebackers coach
Brian Jean-Mary on Thursday. The Vols have told McCaskill that he could give them some immediate help at linebacker, and they have indicated that he could “definitely come in and play.”
“I know they’re in need of a linebacker,” he said. “I don’t know too much about Tennessee. I’m doing my research as we speak. I always know it’s great tradition there — great program, fan base — so everything else, I’m still trying to figure out. It’s new to me.
“They need an impact (player), a leader at that middle-linebacker spot, I’m guessing. The chance is there. It’s just for me to put in the work and go earn it.”
A former standout at Southfield (Mich.) High School for the Arts and Technology, McCaskill said Tennessee defensive coordinator
Tim Banks — a Detroit native who recruits the Detroit area for the Vols — knows “a lot of people around” him. McCaskill said “that’s kind of how” he ended up on Tennessee’s radar after he added his name to the transfer portal last week.
“I didn’t personally have a relationship with (Banks), but a lot of people around me did, so that’s kind of how the connection happened and how they really found out about me, how they want me over there,” McCaskill said. “There is a connection to him, but personally I did not know him.”
Jean-Mary told McCaskill that the Vols like what they have seen from him on film. He recorded 85 tackles, including two tackles for loss and a half-sack, during the 2021 season in addition to recovering a fumble and being credited with three quarterback hurries.
“He just said he loves the way I play,” McCaskill said, recalling his conversation with Jean-Mary. “I fly around. Vocal leader, so I think that really caught their eye.”
While other teams still could add more offers in the coming weeks, McCaskill said he currently expects to take a visit to Tennessee regardless of which other programs ultimately enter the picture.
“I’ve always loved Tennessee as a program, so they’re going to be on my visit list no matter what,” he said.
McCaskill said he expects to take at least a few official visits before deciding on a school this spring. He said he intends to visit Missouri “sometime in March,” and he’s scheduled to visit Texas on April 1.
“Right now, I’m definitely going to take the three — (Tennessee), Missouri and Texas — and then I believe I’m going to schedule Miami, as well,” he said. “It’ll probably be those four, and then maybe whoever comes along would maybe be the fifth. But, for sure, it’s probably going to be those four.”
