I know a lot of fans are somewhere between self denial (you know what? I wanted him all along!) and pure dissatisfaction (This gy is already a liar! We needed a big name!).

As a Michigan fan, I was experiencing these things even stronger two years ago. Michigan fans had been told Jim Harbaugh was the goal and that, if Harbaugh bolted for the NFL, Les Miles would take the job. So to say I get how delusional with hope UT fans were is an understatement. When the administration waited until after RichRod's bowl game and still managed to bungle the coaching search, we were somewhat pissed. When Brady Hoke was hired, everyone thought, "man, thats like the fifth best guy interviewed max".

But Hoke had two things which helped him succeed. First, he wanted to be there; secondly, he wanted to connect to and unite the UM alumni in a way that it hadn't been since Bo Schembechler died and the program had become rudderless. He also brought in HIS coaching staff who understood his system.

Now, we got lucky. We got Greg Mattison from the Ravens, and he was able to take a defense that was slow, couldn't tackle, and looked generally confused (sound familiar?) and turn it into a unit that, well, was competent and knew how to tackle. We also got lucky because the Big Ten (never the deepest conference) had two of its big four schools get trashed by scandal (Penn State and Ohio State).

All this is to say that two years out, if you find a Michigan fan that isn't grateful to have Hoke, he is in a very small minority. He's proven he can recruit, his coaching staff can coach, and the future looks bright. Most of all, the fan base is united. I believe that Butch Jones might be able to do that-- unite the fan base. I think he will get himself connected to UT alumni, and I think he will recruit Tennessee hard. I think that he will recruit and recruit well. And while I don't think you guys will go 11-2, with your schedule 9-4 would be just as amazing. I also think his defensive staff has proven to at least produce competent players. And trust me, when you realize around midseason (I predict UT will win one of its first three very hard games) that your defense at least looks like it knows how to tackle, and you realize that your team is actually getting better, well, its going to feel good. Just don't judge Jones on his first recruiting class or his first four games. Judge him on whether he can rebuild continuity amongst the fan base, rebuild recruiting relationships, and make his team better in games 11, 12, and 13 than it was in games 1,2,3.

Im a UT Student and my sister was a UM student during Rich Rod/Hoke era so i am very familiar with the situation and this is honestly one of the first things i thought of when we hired CBJ. Only difference is Hoke was previously on Michigans staff under CLC, but that doesnt change anything, im still #FULLBUTCH

Get out of here with your calm rationale and good sense. We need more knee-jerk reactions and pointless negativity.

Sensible post, IMO. Your reasoned and intelligent posts are not welcome here, UMUT. Kindly gather your internet posting utensils and GTFO.

Nice post brotha... Your(Mich.) points and recent similar experience are both relative and inspiring. I thank you, as a die hard VFL, for feeling compelled to attempt to connect with another programs downtrodden fan base in order to lend some hope.
As we all know different situations may seem the same but produce very diff results... With that reality said, I am in your camp man. I have the same feel for CBJ. If we can get most of our UT pro's to take advantage of the open door policy and be visible to current players as well as recruits...that one thing can produce unmeasured results IMO.
I have previously posted about a coaches INTANGIBLES that are the glue as well as the motivation for a successful team vibe and atmosphere. I thought that C.Strong had them and I am fully convinced that CBJ has them as well. He is the polar opposite of what we have had the last three years. I give Dooley his credit for the VFL as well as leaving a good base of quality young men and athletes for CBJ to walk into...even if our triplets go pro... Once again thanks for the post.:peace2:

Michigan and Tennessee's coaching situation has mirrored each other longer than that really.

LLoyd Carr and Phil Fulmer had been successful for long times but were losing to the new coaches at their respective rivals and were ultimately run out. They were both replaced by hot names that didn't work out (Lane and RichRod)

Tennessee obviously had to plug in Dooley and there is no comparison there with Michigan but as the OP say both teams most recent coaching searches really were nearly identical.

Go after unrealistic name with local connection, then turn to guy who is happy where he is at and ultimatley end up with a guy most fans were unaware of.

Looking at the schedule if we can get to 6-6 Ill be thrilled. Now w/ Vandy not being an auto win, 5-7 is probable again. But as long as we continue to show improvment throughout the season losses wont really bother me as long as we arent getting blown out

I just want everyone to remember A&M hadn't had a 10 win season since 1998. Hell they were .500 under Sherman. They had 10-2 season playing in the SEC West with Sumlin in his first year, the year after 6-6 season with someone elses players. I'm not saying we're going 10-2 next year, I just don't like seeing fans throw Butch Jones under the bus before he even gets a chance to prove himself.

It hasn't just been the fact that we have lost so much, it's how we lost. Just a total lack of heart and quitting on ourselves (does 40 sec and 2 time outs sound familiar). I look forward to a team that plays with passion for 60 minutes. CBJ seems to instill that in his teams.

I want to believe.

I like the sanity of the post. If the VN could take a deep breath, most schools have been in very similar position - LSU, Alabama, Nebraska, Oklahoma, Notre Dame, USC, UCLA, Wisconsin, etc. There is a long list. Same issues, slow decline in recruiting coupled with less energetic coach and poor player development leads to mediocre season, then a new coach, more excitement, but the player base is just not there. New coach does better in recruiting to his scheme, but is not 'fast enough' to success. Get new coach, a little less excitement, but has better players in new schemes, but his time to reach success is less and .... REPEAT

in all fairness no one knew Manziel was going to be that good. he wasn't even given the job until the week of their first game

Is our goal to be like Michigan? To get the crap kicked out of us by Alabama and Ohio State?

Michigan lost every tough game they played and will most probably lose to USC in their bowl. Their toughest win was against Northwestern. Yes, I said Northwestern (the Vanderbily of the Big10). Every other team they beat was 6-6 or worse. They almost got embarrassed at home to Air Force.

I'm not trying to be negative, but I cant say that I'm happy if our goal is to be like Michigan.

I would have rather tried to be like Ohio State or Alabama or Notre Dame.

Sorry, that's just me.

I'd settle for 10-2 plus a heisman trophy winner. I guess that would be an acceptable first yr. But the next yr we would need to see some real improvements.

Considering that Michigan is just as good/maybe even better than UT as a football program, I would take it. Michigan has been better than UT the last fifteen years.

Butch and Brady are very similar in terms of personality. Both are players coaches that let their coaching staff do their job, his fantastic with recruits and their families in terms of personal connections, demand discipline and bring a fiery, energetic enthusiasm that is contagious and can ignite a program.

Tennessee would have been a whole lot better the last 15 years if we played in a conference with two and a half decent teams in it.
