Mike Gundy's Latest Rant

You're more forgiving than I am. As my beloved program was in free fall and becoming the laughing stock of the nation because we couldn't get anyone to take the job, he took advantage of the situation with no intention of ever coming here. I guess I am still dealing with the pain of that last coaching search. Hope we never have another opportunity to give Gundy a third contract raise.

There was way more behind the scenes in this situation than you realize. As was told to me by someone in the know "the Athletic Department is in a hysterical panic right now..." after the offer was made.

Meh...don’t blame Gundy for taking advantage of a situation created solely by UT’s leadership.

Blame UT’s leadership for putting itself in a situation where the head football coach at Oklahoma freaking State University can play Tennessee like a fiddle to get a raise.

You guys kinda helped in that regard when he was rumored (maybe even talked to, I don't know) about going to UF after Mac was fired.

The powers that be at OSU saw he was being pursued by other programs and reacted accordingly.

If memory serves, he didn't just get the individual raise. He got money for assistants and an upgrade to the training facilities.

If that last part is true, then that’s good for Gundy and his staff.

I don’t doubt we reached out to Gundy to gauge his interest, but in hindsight for both UF and UT, he never seemed like a good fit for the SEC....ditto for Chip Kelly.

If he got an SEC level DC and recruited an SEC level defense, I'd tend to think that high octane offense they love in the Big 12 could be successful.

If not, it's Gus 2.0, the SEC East version.

Gundy is good at identifying "diamonds in the rough" and developing them into solid players. I've seen that myself. However, nobody in the Big 12 operates anything close to what we consider in the SEC to be a proper defense.

My mistake. It was part of his extension last summer.

OSU football: Mike Gundy's salary increased to $5 million for 2018

The contract negotiations last year also led to increases in staff compensation that Gundy had requested.

T. Boone Pickens would have matched anything we offered.
