I believe he was paired with Mike Gottfried. They were the best IMO. Mike was a former coach at Pittsburg.
Your John Ward story is great. I think his basketball calls were better than football. There are a few games on youtube where his voice is superimposed on the video and every time I watch it, I'm amazed at the accuracy and detail he brings to the scene. Of course he *could* take artistic license since the folks listening on the radio couldn't check him on it.All these pbp guys worked for my old production company in 1978-1988 when we produced Monday Night College Basketball (Ted Turner was my partner) in Prime Time …..SEC,Swc,Big 10, Big8 ,and PAC 8 games…we also set up radio networks for Mississippi State, uni of Michigan, Arizona State and an eight year run of syndicated college football previews as well as all star basketball classics such as the Southern Shootout (SEC vs ACC) and the Annual College Coaches East West All Star game.
FWIW, My big break came about when John Ward ,who I knew from ad agency days in Knoxville, set me up with UT to televise a basketball game in which he was the radio pbp guy when UT played Arizona State, and we simulcast him including end of game interview to kill some time left on the clock…I was interviewed by him…pretended to be a fan who lived in Tucson
I have been on this board for years and never posted anything at all, but a poster mentioned Mike Patrick as his fave and my old memory triggered these rambling comments… I have fun rekindling great memories these days,
so I if any reader will like to hear more…just ask..
old guys like to show off (mostly true but maybe an occasional exaggeratio)…

My Dad loved to put on the games on the radio and we'd dim the lights and listen to basketball. This was in the days of England, Hahn, Justice, Boerwinkle, Widby etc. I was a little kid and Ward painted a great picture to the mind's eye on what was happening. You are lucky to have worked with him, and if you know a source of any audio from those days, please share.
Bear Bryant would have been a great sideline interview by Holly!
Did you go to McGavock? I did.Bear Bryant and Adolph Rupp were guests on my first ever attempt as a tv producer…SPORTSVIEW. Hosted by Doug Layton ( previous post I misspelled his name) who was a long time pbp guy for Alabama football and basketball.
concept in those days had never been done , basically a late night live program in front of a large studio audience…produced at Opryland by my old high school pal Jerry Goad..fun to watch the legends in a gossipy type setting. Doug was very good at this…and when I eventually got the Monday Night Basketball underway Doug and former UAB bb coach Jimmy Taylor were our behind the mike team for two seasons..Doug went on to his final destination a few years ago from a long time bout with brain cancer…RIP
The poster insinuated that Mooney was not very good. What do you recall?
I remember his exciting voice. Seems like Mooney had off-field issues, but I'm unsure. George was certainly better than most radio guys, incl Bob Kesling.
