Obviously this is speculation/rumor but John Pennington said he was told that Mike Slive's dream for SEC expansion is Texas, Texas A&M, Duke and North Carolina.

Anyone else hear that?

Thoughts?

I would be all kinds of down with that.

It'd be like a super conference all over again. Damn.

UNC is becoming a decent football program, and is better than Vanderbilt, Kentucky, and MSU right now.

Think about what they bring to the table for all other sports, and also academically.

Basketball-wise, adding UNC, Duke, Texas, and A&M... That takes the SEC from being a fourth to sixth best basketball conference to being the BEST.

I suppose Duke and UNC would add luster to the BB side of the house but I still don't want them.....the SEC is a FOOTBALL conference, by golly!

I've heard it.

I'd love it, but it will never, ever happen.

Never ever happening.

A+M is the only possibility of those four and it's slim.

Slive missed his chance.

I could see us getting A&M, UNC, & Duke. But no way we get Texas. I'm not sure I'd even want them.

Those three plus another Western team would be ideal to me.

Might was well call it a pipe dream.

I wouldn't mind it but I just don't see it happening. Plus I think Texas Tech is hitching to the Texas wagon so that wouldn't happen in this scenario.

Those would be great markets, and would instantly double the academic prestige of the conference by getting Texas and Duke.

I posted the link to the article in a thread last night, it's over at MrSEC.com too. I tried to make an argument for it last night. If the SEC is #1 in football already, why not concentrate on being #1 in basketball...Bring in A&M, Kansas and Duke, UNC. It might not help football, though I think just being in the SEC would help Kansas, and UNC stay consistent in football and obviously having Kentucky,Kansas,Duke and UNC in basketball would be awesome. Obviously, UNC and Duke might not be down with the SEC's academic standards.

I know Pennington did a huge series of articles on expansion that brings every issue into it, but when you hear him talk it is almost solely about TV markets. I realize Texas to the Pac 10 gives them a giant TV market, but don't people have to want to watch it. They don't give a rats rear end about college sports out there. After they start beating each other up, there won't be any undefeated PAC 16 teams. Texas fans will watch, so I see the gain for the PAC 10, but I don't see any benefits for Texas other than money.

Yep. Number 1 football conference. Number 1 basketball conference. No one could touch it.

Adding UNC, Duke, A&M plus either Kansas/Baylor would make for one sick basketball conference.

That would give us 4 of the Elite 8 from last season, plus that last two National Champions in college basketball. Absolutely sick.

No one could touch a Kentucky, UNC, Duke, Tennessee, Vandy, Florida, and Kansas/Baylor basketball conference.

Other than the prevention of becoming obsolete?
Yeah, I'm petrified that the dominant league in college athletics will perish because Washington State and Oklahoma State are now in the same league. Their clashes will certainly drive Florida-Alabama off television.
