On Cal:
1. Their Pac-10 season is shot. People thought they had a chance to win it... Nope. If there's one way in which you need to compete in the Pac, it's passing offense. Even if your defense is good, the passing offenses around the conference can tear anybody up. You have to be able to score often and fast. Lynch and Forsett will fare somewhat better. Not all-American level, but well enough. Look for Cal to finish 4th/5th in the Pac.
2. I think this is the first time in Tedford's D-IA coaching career he has not made a good qb. Ayoob and Longshore just don't have it. Their wide receivers were terrible as well. They looked like our receivers of last season (long past, thank God) -- cement hands.
3. One bright spot Cal has, is their defensive front 7. They did manage to stop a good OL and group of backs all game. Very impressive, may help them although the Pac will probably be more pass-happy this year. Which is unfortunate, because Cal has simply failed to recruit any skilled defensive backs. Or at least enough to keep up. They got burned through the air by an SEC team. The problem is only going to get worse.
On Tennessee:
1. What a start for Ainge. What a start. Seriously, enough cannot be said of him. Take all his jaw-dropping plays from freshman year and they were in this game. Granted Cal's defensive backfield proved extremely poor, but still. Great stuff.
2. I am now dumping money on Meachem as a Heisman/Belitnikoff winner. You heard me. Just keep YACing it up, man.
3. Folks, the difference (aside from sharp play from the WR's) was the offensive line. As good as Cal's defensive front was, the pass protection was on it. Folks, this is where we failed last season. As badly as Ainge failed, every offensive player around him failed just as much. No longer the case. As long as they do their job, Ainge puts up crazy numbers like he did tonight. Or at the least good enough to win.
GO VOLS! Here's to great starts.
