Was watching the final miners being rescued (which was awesome in any number of ways) followed by an on the spot speech by the Chilean pres.

Naturally he praised the Chilean effort but what struck me was the positive comments he made about the Chilean people, the Chilean system and the Chilean way.

Why is it odd? Well, I can't remember our current president speaking so positively about our country, systems or "way". In fact, what I hear most from him is how our systems and to some extent way are problematic.

Does Obama ever stand up and claim America is special?

Another fun fact about the speech. The Chilean president mentioned all the other heads of state he heard from. The list included virtually all of S. America and the PM of Great Britain and Israel. He named the names but IIRC he did not mention Obama specifically as someone he'd heard from but did the the US for it's assistance in the operation.

Exactly.

He sees America as backward, broken, wrong on just about everything it has done in its existance

We're a cause of many of the world's ills. Our imperialist tendencies have caused us to inject OUR ideologies on the world and we use the poor Third World as a puppet for exploitation. Manifest Destiny, the Monroe Doctrine, Roosevelt Corollary, etc. can all be blamed for the current state of the world.....or something like that.

not sure I agree - the dude wants to be left alone; to abide. I don't think the dude respects any authority - particularly reactionary sheriffs of Malibu.

Apolitical for sure. The dude abides, but why does he have to use so many cuss words?

obama would have blamed America's lust for coal and insinuated that it was our fault that those miners were trapped.

One article I read said that the major Chilean mines have a good safety record, but the small ones (like this one, apparently) were dumps. A curious inconsistency.

As for the OP, nothing makes a country great so much as having its politicians bloviate about how great it is. I'm sure Obama can dig up some of the Dear Leader's speeches in North Korea, if that will make the OP happy.

Yes that would make me happy - you've figured me out completely.

You missed his point.

YouTube - Barack Obama Speech at 2004 DNC Convention

Then again his rhetoric has changed since then, and using his story as the "American Dream" is slightly egotistical. But he does talk about the greatness of America.

That's a long time ago and a different person. Ironically, that's has a lot to do with why he was elected. Since then, he's been focused on why various of our systems and institutions suck and how we are just another country. Not very inspiring.
