Hey Volnation i am just as excited as anyone about this win, it kinda reminds me of the miracle at south bend. It sure was an eye opener for the players, and shows what our defense can do when it needs to. Everybody gives our offense credit for this win, but our defense was great in that second half. As great as this win is tomorrow morning alot of vol fans will be asking the big question, what is it going to take to get this team ready to play a football game, do we have to spot every team 21 pts. to open our eyes and realize we are playing a game today. The coaches are extremely fortunate that the heart of our players baled them out again. Rick Clausen should laugh at all the coaches for doubting him. For the life of me when are receivers and backs ever going to start catching the football. Maybe this is the game that sparks our team and gets them motivated to play every saturday. This is an awesome nite in big orange country, definitely some positive to feed off of. :dance2:

Hey, the LSU coaches also doubted Rick. It was a different UT team w/ him on the field, offense and defense.

What did we see tonight?

1) heart - no reason to doubt it other than concern about off-the-field problems. No doubt now. This team stepped up.

2) potential - As Bob Davie so aptly pointed out time and time again, we had TD plays that were off by a hair (or more). I've been wondering were it was.

3) offense - after 17 drives with no score; we score on almost every drive. Steady and ball control. 24 points in a half is more like it!

4) defense - the defense has continued to play outstanding ball. The missed tackles from the last year or so are gone. Hackney may have still been the best QB we've faced (or will face).

The truth doesn't look so bad.

we just came back from 21 points in one half(17 in one quarter) to beat a top 5 lsu team in what is considerably the most hostile atmosphere in college football(death valley at night).

Hey i am not trying to down the mood guys, u all seen the first 30 minutes that is all that needs to be said, how many passes can one team drop in a game. A win is a win and i was just like every other UT fan i was out running around in my yard a yelling, and also if u look at my halftime posts i was doubting them just like most of everybody else. I hope this is the game that lights a fire under this team it sure has the fans

There is plenty of blame and plenty of praise to go around after this game. Because we won, and things have looked so bleak until the 2nd half, let's start with the praises.

PRAISE
1-Rick Clausen. Despite being completely shafted by Fulmer after outplaying Ainge at every turn, Rick came in and took the team over. They were dead, quitting, and totally discombobulated until they got on his shoulders.

2-Gerald Riggs. He ran extremely hard, fast, and made a difference. Excuse him for the fumble; for a while he was the only guy playing.

3-D-line. Totally dominated a good OL in 2nd half. In fact, I cannot remember a more dominant performance against a quality team. Harrell and Mahelona were phenomenal.

4-O-line. They were stinking it up pretty good, but I have been so down on them that the 2nd half made up for it. Not so much that we won, but because they started moving people, making short yardage plays, and picking up blitzers. Still plenty of work left here.

BLAME
1-Fulmer. Let me count the ways. However, the biggest blunder of the year that cost us a game - and nearly another - was the blind insistence on starting Ainge instead of Clausen. Ainge isn't ready.

2-Fulmer. Naming Ainge the starter and alienating the entire team. They clearly play harder and better behind Clausen. In fact, they have said as much in the friggin newspaper.

3-WRs. Let's just say it: They isn't a bigger bunch of underachievers on the planet. They continually dropped passes and do not fight for ball position. If you pay attention, you'll notice that they drift on their routes on a lot of zone/man routes.

4-Pat Washington. See point 3. Does he do anything? He can't recruit, his position always sucks, and he isn't really involved in game planning to any degree. Throw me a bone here.

While we can be happy with a GREAT win, we should not overlook the absolute utter failure of this coaching staff to get the team ready to play football.

Execution, BTW, is a result of training. Well-coached teams execute well. Poorly coached teams execute poorly. Our coaching staff obviously doesn't realize this, because they always use it as a way to blame the players; as if they are somehow completely removed from whether or not the players can execute properly.

OK - big win. That was a pretty solid team we beat tonight. They were more talented than Florida, I thought. We are clearly the most talented team in the SEC. If we could start playing like it, we could run the table. WHERE ARE THE RECEIVERS?

Liper, I don't disagree with any of that.

I will add that CJ Fayton is our go to guy and Meachem did step up and make a couple of plays when we needed them. Also we found ourselves a PR/KR tonight in Lucas Taylor. That kid is a big play waiting to happen.

How about Hardesty getting the nod over Foster?

Riggs is a beast. I think he will really make some noise the rest of the way.

Freakness,

I was noticing the Fayton thing myself. He certainly seems like the most tenacious of the WR.

Good to see Hannon get in the mix a little.

Hardesty must be a good back to jump past all of those other guys. Lucas Taylor does look quick. He was impressive in the pre-season. Briscoe is a good one too, but we haven't had the chance to see him.

BTW, I just cannot get over how bad a coaching decision it was to name Ainge the starter. I firmly believe with every ounce of my body that Clausen would have beaten Florida with relatively little trouble; he's that much better than Ainge right now.

BTW 2, he was CLEARLY pissed at Fulmer during the post-game field and locker room shows. He thanked everyone on the planet for not letting him quit, talked about the heart of the team, etc. Not a single time did he mention or look at Fulmer. Of course Phil, being the after-the-fact-genius that he is, took the time to talk about what a great story it was and how much character Rick has. HEY FULMER - NONE OF THAT STUFF IS NEWS TO THE REST OF US! HE'S HAD THAT FOR A YEAR NOW. OH YEAH, HE WAS THE OFFENSIVE MVP OF THE COTTON BOWL IN CASE YOU FORGOT.

Jmxvol,

I agree. There is no call to get mad at Ainge personally. There is never a call for that.

But I can shout at the Hogfather until I'm blue because he cost us a loss with a single head coaching decision that was unfair and wrong on so many fronts.

BTW, how about Herbstreit tonight calling out our coaching staff? In case you missed it, he basically said they coach tight and have a loaded team they can't get in gear.

I would argue that it's been true for about 10 years. I'm not a reactionary that says one thing after a win and another after a loss.

The reason we had to come back from 2 down, not scoring for 18 possessions, the offense quitting, execution sucks, etc, is because we have a staff that is mediocre and doesn't inspire people. It's the same reason we get blown out twice a year on a national stage.
