Before the Miss St game and the Alabama game, Counzo said that neither game was a must win for UT. I understand his point, but is it a bad idea to put that thought in the player's heads? The reason I ask, is it seems like Bama is playing with their season on the line. UT seems like they feel like they are already in no matter what. I think if if CCM had kept that thought to himself and told the guys that they had to play their way in, we might be seeing a different level of intensity right now. Just my thoughts.

Please, you don't think the players watch TV? You think he's telling them that behind closed doors? He's saying it for the media and for the committee.

Isn't every game a must win? I don't understand the "it's ok if we lose this one" mentality. Maybe it's a competitiveness thing but losing just bothers me. I think you should always go for the kill.

Please, he said it in the pre-game interview within 4 feet of his team. It is entirely plausible that they hear what he says in that type situation.

Tennessee did not play like a team on the bubble. Totally mailed it in. Almost no effort the last 6 minutes of the game, missed layups, guys standing around. Sheesh.

He's saying it for promotion. It's not hard to understand.

You obviously lack reading comprehension. I will spell it out. If he said it (no matter the reason), and the team heard it, then I believe it could affect their killer instinct. Bama obviously had it, we did not. My hypothesis was that they didn't treat the game as must win. I was simply trying to explain why that may have been the case.

Well he failed to coach his team to a win today. That is a fact. My assertions are that we played with poor effort. That is also on him. Butch slap somebody, throw a chair or something, get a technical! Make us believe its important to you.

Sorry but these guys have played for a long time and are competitive individuals. They didn't lose because of what coach said. McRae was almost crying at the end. Our fans just create the silliest things.

I could understand your weak ass excuse/attempt at blaming Cuonzo just fine. These players wanted an SEC tournament championship. Period. Cuonzo made those statements for an obvious reason.

More plausible that they have a clue that its coach speak for the cameras

I never put full blame on Counzo. There you go making things up again. I said he didn't help. Ultimately it is on the players. They have to give the effort, and they didn't. But for a coach to say, "No, we don't have to have this game" is bewildering to me. His response, simply, should have been "We need to take it out of the comittee's hands." But instead he gave the response he did. The product on the court speaks for itself. There was no killer instinct. Couple that with CCM's remark, and it is not a big leap to say that the team didnt feel like they HAD to have this game.

If you don't get it, you don't get it. They aren't little kids. They know exactly what Cuonzo's doing.

Obviously we aren't gonna come to a resolution. I think what he said didnt help. In a day and age where everything said by anyone is used as fodder for motivation, where everything said by everyone is put on bulliten boards. I don't think it's a stretch to say that a comment, BY YOUR COACH, might affect how you play. If that's silly, so be it.

Guess we can agree to disagree. Cheers.

I think they were really tired, they did have their legs under them the entire game.

Martin was dooleying it, ala it ain't the end of the world if we lose this game.

Just because we lost doesn't mean there was no effort people.

If we had won by 10 would that mean Bama wasn't giving enough effort?

Is it such a hard concept to understand that a team might play hard, really really really really want to win, yet still lose?

Sorry, not trying to hijack the thread.

I actually am forced to agree with the OP. When I heard him say that I must admit I didn't like it and was surprised and confused as to why he'd say that.

It's obvious that he's lobbying for us to dance, but abacon is right. He should have said, "Let's take it out of the committee's hands."

While he shouldn't have said it, I don't know that it affected the team. As a matter of fact, I highly doubt it. But that just isn't something a coach should say IMO.

I see your point. It may not have been the reason for what we saw. But, like you said, why say it?

In reference to your other post. I think it's hard to argue that Bama was playing on a different level intensity wise than we were. It coulda been a number of things. I feel like we didnt come not the game feeling like we HAD to win. But, that's just my opinion. Could it have been fatigue, yeah. It could have been a lot of stuff.

I actually did think we looked slightly fatigued, which surprised me considering how little energy we had to exert to beat Missy State yesterday.

Whether that was the reason we lost or not, I don't know. I just thought Bama was better.

No reason for Martin to put more pressure on his players, they are getting that enough from everyone else. They are not stupid though, they know they had to play well in the tourney. Alabama outplayed us, it happens. We either get in now or we dont.

If the Vols get left out, then this looks bad for Martin, even if he was just doing it for the pub.

You win you take care of any issues with other bubble teams, but if you lose suddenly you are sweating and hoping other teams lose. As we saw last night with Maryland and Ole Miss, now you losing is even bigger.

If we do make it in then obviously it turns out to be moot, but I think this may come back to haunt him.
