As of late, it is not, but historically-speaking NC State WBB is a top 20, top 25 program on par with UNC and Duke. UNC, and particularly Duke WBB is a relative newcomer to the scene in comparison to NC State. The #1 program in the ACC is, however, Virginia for sure, the alma mater of Dawn Staley. When former coach Debby Ryan was coaching up until a few yrs ago, the program went to many F4s and dominated the conference on yearly basis, always outpacing NC State and Maryland Terps for the conference titles as it seemed.

I used to like coach G but after her failure at Texas, I'm not too sure if we want her here. She had every reasons to succeed at Texas, but couldn't.

People always say that to be sure about Texas but coaches routinely go there and fail. Mack Brown is the only coach who accomplished something but then his ship immediately sank and he couldn't sustain. There is just something about Texas where coaches just don't ever live up to the hype. I think GG can coach much better than Holly.

Well again it's about the coach. Virginia has not been significant for 15 years now. But anybody just about would be better than Holly. She is a very substandard coach.

It's cultural / tribal / ethnic. The Texas administration and fan base has alienated people for decades. If you aren't Texas born-and-bred or at least thought to be you aren't accepted and will be viewed very suspiciously. GG was born in Michigan for God's sake and coached at Duke. To a Texan, Michigan is another country and Duke is hated. Only a coach from UNC-Chapel Hill or California or New York would would have been rejected more quickly.

Yes, it's true TEXAS as a whole with the biggest budget in the nation and all the available resources has not lived up to the expectations. You can say Mack Brown underachieved at Texas even w/ one Natty in 2005; many people felt that he should have won more. Charlie Strong is just 11-14 in his 2 years so far. Shaka Smart in his first year won 20 games and advanced to NCAAT losing in the round of 64, and we'll see how he pans out. I think Rick Barns with all the NCAAT appearances definitely underachieved at Texas as well. He could have done better there.

The one person who achieved any sort of distinction is Jody Conradt in WBB who had a hall of fame career there with 783-245 record and one Natty. There was a very good female soccer coach at Tennessee by the name of Angela Kelly who left a very successful program at Tennessee for Texas a few years ago; when she left for Texas, she sounded as if she would win multiple NCs at Texas but I don't believe she's having as much success there so far as she did at Tennessee. Hype vs substance. Yep, that's Texas way I guess..
