So i think Mizzou could bounce back.

They have a good looking D-Line if it stays healhy. Charles Harris, Terry Beckner, and Augusta can play anywhere.

Lbs are fast but new.

Secondary is fast and has played a lot of football.

Offensively they should IMPROVE.
- Chris Black, former deep threat for Alabama is now with them
- added 5 star JUCO Rb Ntreace Strong out if East St. Louis.
(Edit) Strong did not enroll.
Yikes!!

Veteran line.

QB Drew Lock was highly rated, if he can make a jump then watch out for Mizzou.

They should be better than V-Tech

I feel like I heard recently about two of Missouri's D linemen getting suspended or expelled. Am I making this up?

They'll be good on defense for sure. If them and vandy improve the offense/o-line/QB play they could surprise some teams

Can-Turkey gets to 6 wins this season and Vandy has a better D and running game than Mizzou imo. Not to mention Pinkel is not going to be easily replaced. he was close to Bill Synder levels of being able to get his players to play above and beyond their rankings. It's going to be a tough year in Columbia imo

Missouri was never good.

The only reason they won the east in back to back seasons is because Tennessee and Florida were down.

With Tennessee back to being a legit contender and Florida on the rise, Missouri's luck is up.

They'll be a 5 to 7 win team going forward.

I don't care how 'veteran' their offensive line is, it's terrible. They scored in single digits in 6 games last season and went without a touchdown in 5 games. Simply saying they should improve is a modest assumption.

Dude you actually had some semblance of credibility until this thread. Missouri will finish 4th in the east AT BEST.

Yeah they played some bad football at times last year.

But they still gave us trouble, and defeated BYU -rallied for Pinkel.

They'll be a better team this year. They had some major injuries preseason that set them back.

But their offense will be better, and their defense is always stout.

Can't sleep on them.

What?? Never good?

They beat Florida, Texas A&M, Arkansas and UGA in the same season 2 years ago.

Come on now...

This is really more of an "Around the NCAA" thread than a Vols football thread, and should probably be moved there.

Yes. The other defensive end from last year and a DT that started all of 2014 but then missed all of last year after after being in a rollover car accident that broke the tibia in his left leg, broke several of his ribs, and damaged ligaments in his left knee.

In the latter's case (the DT, who wasn't able to make his summer grades while recovering), though, it would probably be more of missed opportunity at making their line better than it getting worse/hurting (since he didn't play at all last year).

The dismissed DE likely hurts their defensive line performance, though.

Mizzou just lost their best two D lineman

Maybe. One of those two didn't even play last year, though he was projected into the draft . From the looks of it though, the other (Brady) wasn't better than Charles Harris and Terry Beckner. Losing supporting production hurts, too, though.

Their offensive production was beyond terrible; they were fielding a true freshman QB and their offensive line play was horrendous...so much so that the end product was pretty much a worse than FCS-level offense.

Perhaps the best illustration was their 9-6 loss to UGA, a game in which the deciding series was Missouri intercepting a pass and getting tackled at the UGA 1 yard line on the return...after which their offense proceeded to get nilch on 3-4 straight plays.

Their offensive line play has to drastically improve for that team to even turn out decent. (Butch also recruited Drew Lock, did he not? We were in his final 3 with Missouri and OSU.)

However, their defense also deserves credit for keeping them in their games last year. Looking back on it, they were one of the 10 worst teams in time of possession last year, and they fielded a top 5 to top 10 defense...when that defense had to be out on the field for 2/3 of the game each week.

Their defense gave almost everyone trouble, but it wasn't enough to balance their offense, which was so bad that it probably could have started every possession inside the end zone and still not scored.

They'll be a better team this year. They had some major injuries preseason that set them back.

Aside from Brantley's car accident, who did they lose in the preseason? Mauk got dismissed during the season - which more was a problem because it forced a true freshman QB onto the field - but I don't seem to recall a major rash of injuries or anything like that for them. (2012 yes, but I'm not sure of such for 2015).

But their offense will be better, and their defense is always stout.

Can't sleep on them.

It's bound to at least be somewhat better because it couldn't realistically be much worse unless they were to just not field one at all. It'd be pretty hard for it not to be better, when it's as bad as it was..."better" isn't really a high bar for improvement (i.e., most likely it's not going to be "good.")

He's going to be very hard to replace at that school. His 191 wins were a record there, and he made a school where 3-win seasons had pretty much become the norm from the 80's into the 2000's and into one that regularly made bowls (9 times in 10 years, compared to the 2 bowls from 1984 to 2003) and ended ranked 5 times across 8 years, including two top 5 finishes (finished with 10+ wins those 5 times, 2 12-wins being the school's first and no back to back 10+ win seasons before him).

It's going to be rough not just with the coaching changes but the ongoing shift in recruiting hotbeds, as well. Pinkel made a lot of his success taking a lot of players from Texas - where there's so much talent, of course, that while OU and Texas might get the top of the cream, there's more than enough to be had even among players who would be the Longhorns' and Sooners' second, third, or sometimes fourth choices. That pipeline seems to have dried up with the conference change (it's harder to sell Texas kids when they'll only play a team from Texas every 6 years and play in/near Texas every 12 years).

In 2013 - when they fielded the team that finished 12-2 and #5 in the country - the roster had 34 players (a little under a third of the team) recruited from the state of Texas. Now? They're looking at fielding a team this season with a total of 19 players from there.

They're pretty much left having to heavily rely on the state of MO as a main pipeline, a state that between 2012-16 produced just 16 prospects rated 4-star or better (just 1 5-star)...and those recruits haven't been terribly loyal to the state school: only 6 of them actually chose Missouri. It's a school in a state that certainly needs to import talent for success...but it no longer plays the teams around the pipelines previously used, and any in the states of teams currently played aren't terribly strengthened (at least not by this point in time).

It's likely to be rough going there for a while. (Also, respectfully disagree on Vandy's D.)

I think this season is going to be rough for Mizzou. Coach Odom was not their first, second, or third choice to replace Pinkel. That school and administration is toxic after how the boycott and protests. They have lost their AD and their interim AD after a short tenure. I just do not see stability at Mizzou and I think that will impact their football program for years to come.

Im not buying on Mizzou 2016. But they just hired Jim Sterk from San Diego St as new AD

I believe their outstanding d-line coach either retired or took another position but I could be wrong.

He wasn't retained by the new staff (Odom went out to get another coach for the position; Craig Kuligowksi joined Mark Richt's new staff in Miami, at the same position.

Part of the reason Pinkel said he announced his cancer and retirement in early November, instead of the end of the season, was to give his staff enough time as to be able to find work elsewhere (he said this right after when he made the announcement).
