I think Butch is turning out to be the Billy Beane of college football. He's not going with what everyone else is just because that's the way it's been.

He has a system and he rates players differently than others. From what I've seen from him he rates speed higher on the list than most. I'm not talking about skill players every team wants speed there.

I think he rates his LBs, ends, D lineman and O lineman differently than allot of others where he values speed over lots of other factors.

I believe Butch is going to build a team with what he is looking for in a player rating systems be damned. So far I'm very impressed with what we will be putting on the field this year.

I think we need to sit back and enjoy the ride. Maybe, just maybe he has put a scouting system in place like Beane that nobody else has used before and will work.

Every coach in the country uses his own scouting system to rank order recruits and target recruits.

If he wins this fall, it will be a gigantic step for this program and he will earn a lot of trust from this fan base. Right now it is hype with a beautiful roster. Turn that into wins and we'll trust the eye for talent, development, and so on.

I do think he has a mold for his scheme and is finding that these last few classes.

I don't think he's the only one doing that.

I thought Butch checks out the recruiting forum before offering a kid, no?

Crunchy/Leb has been hired as new recruiting coordinator. We only take TN kids and we only offer one scholarship per position at a time. If the kid says no then we will offer another one that plays that position. If he accepts recruiting is done for the year at that position.

The Debord hire still makes me scratch my head and is the biggest mistake Butch has made since being here. School and Scott hires are home runs.

Negative. If I'm taking 4 guys on the OL, I can offer 4 at once. No need to just offer one at a time. That is until I start filling up. Yes, instate kids are priority 1. Only look out of state if I can't fill the need in TN.

As for "money ball". I'm not really buying it. Sounds like an excuse for a poor recruiting cycle. Why are we picked to be in ATL? All the 4-5*'s signed the last couple 3 years. I doubt Butch has reinvented a plan to corner the 3* market. It's just been a lot of misses this year.

It made total sense. Debord has the same philosophy as Butch and didn't have to overhaul his offense that had been put in place. Debord also helped with the OL. I guess you can argue that Butch could have made a Shoop-like hire, but I doubt we would have paid the money a year ago, and we weren't getting a top 5-10 coordinator at the time. While he wasn't in coaching, Debord had high level experience.

Butch has mostly made the right decisions. Now it's time to see the results.

You're trying to win SEC titles and make the playoffs. Hiring a guy as OC that no other school wanted does not make sense. It was a total homer move and the only thing I think he deserves criticism for so far.

I didn't have a problem with the offense last year. I think DeBord did well. I'd like to see a QB coach, but as OC DeBords offense put up some stats. IMO passing game is limited by what Dobbs can do. Hopefully he is better throwing it this year. I'm good with the OC.

You must be one of those guys that believe Kirby actually ran Saban's defense at UA.

Given his use of analytics for all kinds of stuff, this stats junky would love to meet the people that crunch the numbers behind the scenes.

I'm just trying to figure out what name Butch uses in the recruiting forum on VN. I know he's here and is soaking up all of our knowledge.

I may get slammed over this but I feel DeBord is one of the main reasons we are in the hunt for an SEC title. The 2013, 2014, and 2015 recruiting classes were brought in to run Butch's style offense. You bring in anyone else with a different philosophy you have the potential to be counter-productive in 2015 since they would be running a new system and this year we could be talking about will we finally adapt to "x" coordinators system with players that were recruited for Butch's system. Also we obviously had deficiencies at the OL coaching spot and QB coaching spot. Debord has had a successful past at coaching both. The OL did vastly improve last year the QB spot we will see this year. You get all of this plus at a lower salary = Slam Dunk Move

I like the DeBord hire. I thought he did a good job in his first year back in coaching. He needs to do a great job this year. We'll start seeing if he can do it starting in two weeks and two days.

Peyton Manning days 'til football!!!
