Poll: Tea Partiers Republican, White, Male – Think Obama Favors Blacks Over Whites

Last night, the New York Times and CBS News released a poll finding that the “18 percent of Americans who identify themselves as Tea Party supporters tend to be Republican, white, male, married and older than 45.” The poll, which “oversampled” Tea Party supporters “for the purpose of analysis” and “then weighted” them “to their proper proportion in the poll,” found that Tea Partiers are more likely than the general public to think President Obama “favors blacks over whites“:
The overwhelming majority of supporters say Mr. Obama does not share the values most Americans live by and that he does not understand the problems of people like themselves. More than half say the policies of the administration favor the poor, and 25 percent think that the administration favors blacks over whites — compared with 11 percent of the general public.
They are more likely than the general public, and Republicans, to say that too much has been made of the problems facing black people.

According to the poll, Tea Partiers are also more likely to believe that President Obama was born in another country, with 30 percent believing that compared to 20 percent of the general public. Supporters of the Tea Party are also more likely to believe that violence against the government is sometimes justified:

In terms of where the Tea Party turns for news, the poll found that 63 percent watch Fox News “most for information about politics and current events.” Additionally, 53 percent of Tea Partiers consider “shows hosted by people like Glenn Beck and Sean Hannity” to be news rather than entertainment:

The Tea Partiers, who view Sarah Palin very favorably but aren’t sure she is ready to be president, have a distorted image of whether or not their views reflect America. According to the poll, 84 percent of Tea Partiers believe that “the views of the people involved in the Tea Party movement generally reflect the views of most Americans.” Only 25 percent of the general public, however, believe that the Tea Party reflects their views.

Did this rambling disaster have a point?

The piece about Obama's racism is absolutely true as his history attests.

The piece about America's view is just crap. We all share some views with this lot and some we couldn't care less about.

Disturbing that they think Hannity and Beck are news.

Disturbing that they are significantly more inclined to use violence.

Disturbing that they think their views are shared by everyone.

And I guess Keith Olberman is news. The washed-up Ex-ESPN Sportscenter commentator turned wanna-be political guru.

Give us a break!!

I'm not sure I completely agree with all the weighting and proportion crap they did. But the fact that over half think the likes of Hannity and Beck are news sources is kind of disturbing. If this poll were done on left wing-nuts and similar numbers said the same about Olbermann and Maddow the righties on here would be just as loud.

Mr. Intellectual Honesty strikes again. You've completely taken that out of context and exaggerated the significance and difference between TPs and general public.

Only 18% R, white, male over 45 and married. I thought that was the entire group. Hmmm.

I read that as 18% of Americans identified themselves as TP'ers. Of those 18%, they tended to be R, white, male, over 45, and married.

Interesting that Obama campaigned on the idea that the previous administration's policies were aimed at helping the rich. Now a group thinks the current administration's policies are aimed at helping the poor and that is considered "disturbing".

Actually, the survey is probably underreporting the true harshness of their sentiments. When asked these questions, I am sure that the pollster had to say that they were from the NYT and CBS, two mortal enemies of the Tea Party. A fair number of the respondents surely dialed it back a little, knowing that they were on the spot.

The exception is probably the Fox and Beck, Hannity thing. They would answer truthfully there I think just because they know that their cultish tryst with Fox, et. al., tilts all of us normal people so much.

People keep saying tea-party. All that is in fact is a Republican subculture with delusions greater that their parent affiliation.

Disturbing that they think Hannity and Beck are news.

Add Limbaugh

Disturbing that they are significantly more inclined to use violence.

Republicans are Hawkish.

Disturbing that they think their views are shared by everyone

And if they are not shared they should be forced upon everyone.

24% of your non-tea party "normal people" considered it more news than entertainment as well
