I was thinking about market failures, and the example of the Pringles chip came to mind.

Pringles are the golden standard of potato chips. Each chip is off the highest quality and consistency, packaged beautifully (and fully recyclable), all palates catered to, inexpensive (even relative to inferior chips).

Why then do we waste so many resources making other chips? Pringles offer far more value for money (especially considering the consistency of each chip) than any other chip. They taste better than any other chip. Why doesn't everyone then make Pringles? They can't have a patent on high quality, high consistency potato chips.

Why do we want a choice? Pringles are the best value and the highest quality product. They taste the best; they are the best.

Instead though we see a "rush to the bottom" - the cheapest tat chips blanket shelves of the lowest quality and consistency. This is what "competitors" make. It is market failure, and it is the pattern everywhere, in complete contradiction to Adam Smith.

Thoughts?

I personally prefer Baked Lays or Kitchen Cooked. Pringles cans do not cater to my hand so well.

Kettle brand and Cape Cod both kick the absolute feces out of Pringles for taste. Snyder's too IMO.

Pringle's does package well, especially the smaller tins for things like throwing in a bag or back pack that might take some abuse before eating them.

You're big into polls and such...how about some "right out your back door" comparisons that put Pringle's clearly above other brands in taste tests?

kettle chips = too hard, cut your mouth, lack same consistency.

Doritos = the closest real competitor, but lacks same consistency

Baked Lays = y'all are just being contrarians. No way anyone really believes this

Caters to your hand? Again, just being contrarians.

@hndog69 - I was hoping there was some data out there, but I haven't looked yet.

It is the height of socialistic stupidity to try and dictate what everyone's personal taste should be.

i do like the chip consistenct in pringles, but they don't taste right with dip. i do like regular chips that have curled around, for some reason they taste great with dip. i do wish they could filter our the crumbs better. nothin worse that getting a bag with mostly small chips or crumbs.

that's the beauty of free market, we can choose what chips we like. God forbid the government tries to regulate chip size.

Not really.

Didn't say it had to be Pringles Standard. Salt and vinegar, BBQ, sour cream and onion, thai sweet chili - Pringles makes them all. Amazingly high quality each one. Anyway, I was trying to gauge what the legitimate competitors would be. Looks like Kettle Chips are a winner, although I'm not sure how this can be. Sun Chips are good, and they probably have the second best consistency.

What I'm saying is there is a lot of waste and tat out there (which cannot be denied). Why is there a great "rush to the bottom" when clearly there is a superior chip for taste, consistency, value for money. It makes ZERO economic sense. It's a market failure propped up either by 1. more wasteful marketing, or 2. depressed wages

same is boring. variety is the spice of life. pringles is a sterling example of mediocrity. no one chip rises above the other. what you call consistency, i call the death of a potato chip's dream.

I don't understand how consistent superlative quality is "mediocrity".

I think this is what joevol should be railing against as the death of 'Merica.

just think gibbs, if you were a liberal in power, you could give pringles all kinds of government grants and contracts. you could even exempt them all the regulations that you would place on other chip manufacturers. that would ensure that pringles would be the best chip at the lowest price.

capitalism with the backing of the government, the best way to defeat your competitors.

who says the consistancy is superaltive? maybe you are a bad judge of chip quality and don't realize.

The 10 Best Potato Chips

Ok, these were just the top three Google returns on Best Potato Chips. No Pringle's in sight.

So next I tried the other approach and searched Pringles VS. This usually results in a Pringles vs Lays Stax comparison. The first open ended comparison I found was great as it was a poll...Pringles did not fare well.

Its a conspiracy to hide the truth. Gibbs will lead us to the light of potato chip freedom.
