More stripes coming off!

We might have won out on the deal of Lee and Pickett. If Pickett can play then I say he will have an impact this year. I think that will give us four quality SEC backs. Neal and Lane will get the majority of the carries Hill will be our bruiser short yardage guy and Pickett will be kind of a change of pace back. That is a nice rotation.

All freshman have a black stripe starting out on their helmet.

They have to earn their orange one, meaning they lose the black one

I don't believe that.....they will all have it off in another week, strange they are all coming off 2-3 weeks before are first game.

What would they do, come out for AP with a black stripe? Just a cool gimmick, but anything that motivates the players is still good.

So is it possible for them not to earn it this year? Or can they earn it after the season is over?

Idk, if it was up to me I'd have then come out with no stripe on there helmet for games until they earn the orange stripe, or something similar.

Im just stating what Butch said. I have no idea what HE plans to do. IMO, if they haven't earned their orange stripe by game 3, they're red shirting. They ain't ready for the SEC

There is no shame in red shirting. Reflects a team's quality depth.

IMHO, of a typical 25 man recruiting class only 2 or 3 true freshmen should be expected to play immediately, and only at either WR or RB. And that is due to the team's dire need at a position or the recruit's man-child status.

Everyone else red shirts. This gives them time in the S&C program, to learn the playbook & understand the traditions.

RS Freshmen & Sophomores contribute considerably to special teams & begin to enter games in mop up situations. Standout Sophomores get into the rotation a bit. Rotation is primarily made up of Juniors & Seniors, with a few 5th year Senior silverbacks still around.

Been a long time since we looked anything like that.

I completely agree, redshirting is a benefit. You get time to get to SEC size. Most ppl aren't ready to play competitively in this conference out of hs

That's not true. Tennessee, in need of tougher bodies is now recruiting zebras direct from the savannah. Once they learn to stand upright instead of on all four legs so as to impersonate being human, their stripes are removed.

...at first pass Fugate would still be wearing his black stripe.

And Palardy may be the first Vol to ever lose and then later re-earn his black stripe!

I live in Maryland. One of my co-workers when to Maryland and when Justus Pickett transferred, I had never heard of him. So I asked my co-worker about him. He said the reason he transferred because he sucked and was not even gonna make the 3 deep roster. It's very nice to see he is earning his stripes with the Vols. Either my co-worker was wrong. Or transferring gave this young man new life and new motivation. Either way. It's nice that he seems to be working hard for us.

Doubt they all lose their black stripes.

That's about what you would expect a Maryland fan to say.
