Wade. The best pass defense is a PASS RUSH. We didn't have one this year. In years past Henderson, Haynesworth, Overstreet,Rashad Moore, Aubrayo Franklin,Demetrin Veal, Constantinn Ritzmann, Jesse Mahelona, Parys Harrelson, Omari Hand, Tony McDaniel, Kevin Burnett, Dominique Stevenson, Eddie Moore, Keyon Whiteside, have all been in our front seven. We didn't have that this year and I don't see us having that next year. We have only three proven DT's in Bolden, Mapu and Fisher. If one get's hurt or has "off the field" problems, then what? Chavis relys on pressure from his front seven and has his db's giving the wrs a 10 yd cushion instead of playing in your face man coverage. And look at the dbs we have had in the past: Andre Lott, Jabari Greer, Julian Battle, Rashad Baker, Gibril Wilson , Jason Allen, all of those guys are either/ or still in the NFL. Looks like Chavis would play his db's tighter instead of giving such a cushion. This results in opposing qb's either stepping up in the pocket and running for the first down or picking us apart methodically. For years 3rd and 10+ has been a weakness in a John Chavis defense. All the dbs look lost and confused,yet they go on to play in the NFL either as a draft choice or FA(Baker,Greer). Makes you wonder is it the players who are lost or is it the scheme?:dunno:

wow didnt think Morley was ready to go early as only a sophomore, I assume you mean in 2 years after he graduates.

Morley was constantly out of position this season. Hopefully that will be fixed as he learned.

I just don't see how anyone thinks he was any good. He still has to grow a lot.

NFL. Hefney is just talking, he isn't ready yet. But in 3 years look back and 3/4 of this secondary will be in the NFL. Morley has talent. #1 rated safety out of Miami Killian in 2004.

Sorry, StevieRay, but UT doesn't have any proven DTs coming back next season. Neither Mapu, Bolden, or Fisher (especially) have proven anything. Mapu and Bolden showed flashes of talent, but they were consistent enought to say they are "proven."

Not strong at all. He has the athletic ability of a Sean Taylor he just has to learn the position.

I am saying they are the only 3 dt's that have any game experience to speak of. Any this goes back to what I am saying about the schemes. Our db's in the past have gotten beaten like a rented mule. Jabari Greer, Rashad Baker, Julian Battle, Gibril Wilson,Andre Lott and Jason Allen. Outside of Allen and Wilson who would have thought those other db's would have made it in the NFL? Chavis schemes are awful. The guy has had a world of talent and our secondary's are for the most part pitiful. This year we had more ints.than I can remember. But it was pure athletic ability alone. Slade needs to go. And Chavis is overated. Always has been. Can't ever get off the field on 3 and 10+. Watch it next year.:whistling:

I believe 3rd and 10 was a result of a couple things.

1.) We obviously did not have the talent to get pressure with only our front 4 or 5 guys. Blitzing with linebackers were almost a necessity to get pressure. Thus, the secondary most give a bigger cushion.

2.) Our offense was so good this past year, I felt our defense took a "bend but don't break" mentality. They could play a little softer and give up some more first downs because our offense could drive down the field. I believe we give up more 3rd and 10's, but less BIG gains.

on for years. Read my first post that names who we have had in our front seven since 2001. And the db's we have had. Chavis has always played a bend but don't break. Don't like Chavis as a dc. Look at the dbs that are in the NFL from UT but didn't do squat while they were in Knoxville. Think coaching didn't have a little something to do with it?

Julian Battle = Cut by Chiefs (traditionally one of the NFL's worst secondaries)

Jabari Greer = 2nd string for Buffalo Bills

Rashad Baker = Cut by Buffalo

Andre Lott = Career backup for Washington. Played in one game for the Bears this year.

You act as if we are cranking out DB's as well as Miami.

I agree with you guys about our defensive schemes being bad and not being able to get off the field on 3 and 10+ many times and that just killed me.

However, if not for our defense we would have lost to Alabama and Kentucky this year.

Right, but if not for our offense, we would have lost to Air Force, South Carolina, and Georgia.

I didn't think anyone was talking about our offense. This whole thread has been about Chavis and our DT's and DB's so I am not sure what your getting at, although I do agree but I was just saying what I said because this thread was about the D and not the offense.

As a rule, UT has had very good Defenses with Chief calling the shots. It was tough to watch at times this year but his resume' is not made up of just this season.

2004 was a pretty off year for the defense, as well. Not nearly as bad as this year, but we didn't exactly excel.

achilles tendon before going to Washinton. Lott and Greer are backups. But they are in the NFL. Did any of these players other than Battle do anything to make you think they would Make it to the NFL? Greer and Baker were Free Agents and are still in the league. Chavis used to pad his numbers against the weaker teams (Memphis, Vandy And Kentucky in November to make up for Florida and Georgia. Even Vandy and Kentucky are not safe anymore.

Actually, we've given up quite a few points to Vandy and UK recently. Anyway, Rashad Baker was All-SEC his junior year. Many people thought if he had left then he would have been a second round pick. He came back and had a mediocre senior season.

i think it's safe to say that talent wise, across the board on D, we are not as good as we once were.

Morely still has that "potential" word hanging around him. One has to hope he gets better with age/experience.

you're right about the front 7, they aren't as good as what we have had in the past. guys like bolden, ayers, mapu etc...need to step up and get better.

i think we have some talent on D, and the experience a lot of them got this year will help depth wise, but i can't say that i expect them to come out and be a dominant unit again in the immediate future.

we lived off turnovers this year, and that's not a bad thing, but it's also something you can't count in game in and game out. at some point, you have to string together some 3 and outs and force teams to punt.

an interesting stat that i'd like to see (if they even keep it) is "punts against" per team in the SEC...i'd have to think we would probably be in the bottom half of hte conf.
