I think the grades they gave are purely based on prior head coaching experience and nothing to do with coaching ability, promise or success as a coordinator. Pretty poor article in that regard but consistent in its mediocrity.
Yes...lazy article written solely based on years coach experience.

These idiots gush over failures like Tom Herman and sex trafficking All-Star Hugh Freeze (dude is legit, though). Alex Golesh was given bottom billing of this round of the coaching carousel with a fellow coach from a Tennessee school in Trent Dilfer. I can't wait to see Alex succeed @ USF!

Grading new FBS college football coaches: Matt Rhule gets an A, Trent Dilfer is a D+
I mean Herman and Freeze are at this stage more proven, safer hires. All these articles do is predict probability of failure due to experience. Like Tom Herman might not be a big hire for Auburn or the like but he’s a huge hire for a school like Florida Atlantic.

I would have probably graded the hire as a solid C. Being the leader of an organization is not an easy thing even for the experienced and from what I have gathered; Golesh is inheriting a mess at USF. The hope is that he is wise beyond his years, and he is able to transition into a significantly greater leadership role very quickly. We know he’s a talented coordinator but there is alot of uncertainty. Only time will tell if he was ready for the challenge.

Based on no head coaching experience and only 2 years as a coordinator, it makes sense right now. All they can base it on is resume, and Golesh's resume is very limited.

Pretty sure nobody was excited about Heupel either. That turned out ok for us. Hopefully Golesh proves them wrong.

I’m like y’all ….I hope AG has a great career. BUT…it’s a gamble anytime a school hires a coordinator w/o head coach experience. I don’t believe in “can’t miss” coaches or players either for that matter.

Just saw that Lipscomb is looking at Jason Witten to take over for Dilfer can Tennessee not hire Witten to coach tightends ?

Gotta give Golesh props for having the guts to take on his first HC gig at USF. They ain't been noticeable since that coach that beat his players into submission.

Among the hires they gave better grades:

Biff Poggi: A 63-year-old multi-millionaire who coached a high school in Baltimore before spending the last two years in an off-the-field role with Michigan.
Lance Taylor: No head coaching experience, but he did manage to crater Louisville's Top-10 offense as their OC in 2022.
Kenny Dillingham: No HC experience. He's been a pretty decent OC with very little experience in calling plays. He might be the most similar hire to Golesh.
Ryan Walters: No HC experience. Former Mizzou DC and spent this year as Illinois DC (a team that only played one ranked opponent in 2022).
Troy Taylor: 3 years as HC at Sacramento State. He was the Utah OC for two years. Otherwise he's only worked at the HS and FCS levels since 2000.

Those stories are eyeball and click bait pieces.

Never read a sports story in a national publication. I've found that national sportswriters know nothing worthwhile and are full of themselves. Some local sportswriters and sportscasters who follow a team are worth paying attention to.

Interestingly enough, he’s poaching the entire Iowa State staff. It’s crazy how quickly things seem to be falling apart for Matt Campbell,
