Impressive, but it was in only 159 carries. If he had done it with 200+ carries, then I would really be moved by it.

I'm too lazy to research it right now, but it would be interesting to see what James Stewart and Aaron Hayden's yards per carry were that same year.

OK, Hat, one of the few times I ask, "What do you mean?" I may just be tired.....and drunk from my Occoee trip, or I may just be reading out of context. I'm sure you'll set me straight, and then I'll say, "Oh, I get it."

I think he's just saying that relatively speaking, 159 carries is not a lot, so the numbers could be a little skewed by some long runs.

Ok, I gotcha.

I thought he was comparing the same amount of yardage with 159 vs. 200+ carries

Correct. It's like hitting .350 in the majors with 300 at bats. It's an accomplishment, but not as impressive as doing it over 550 ABs.

If I could go to the plate 4 times vs. the Atlanta Braves pitchers, and retire, I might be right there, too.

It was only 159 carries, but it was the 9th highest season rushing total in UT history. Its only 75 yds less then Chuck Webb's all-time season high total in 89.

Wow, that is amazing. I didn't realize that. I would like to find who his offensive line was that year.

I think Kevin Mays, Bubba Miller, and Jeff Smith were part of that o-line. As of last season, Bubba Miller and Jeff Smith were still in the NFL.

What else is amazing is only one other back has averaged more then 6 yds per a carry, James Stewart's 6.1 in 94. I don't think anyone else will average more yards/carry in our lifetime.

Actually the highest average per a rush is:

Highest avg. per rush (min. 65 rushes)—7.9 (881 yards, 111 rushes) Hank Lauricella (1951)

Garner just has the highest for those rushing for a 1000+ yds.

How about Deon Grant vs Auburn in 99. He had like three ints in the first half, returned 1 for a td, and nearly ran another one back for a td.

Auburn's punter stole the show during that game. :biggrin2:

Dustin Colquitt vs. S Carolina (forgot the year). UT was playing terrible and he kept SC pinned back. About as good a game from a punter as you'll ever see.

2003. PJ, if you check the World Cup thread, you'll see that you may well have won yourself 2 tickets to the UT-UK game.

Good call . . . That was definitely the best game I've ever seen out of a punter. He flipped the field on SC over and over again. He also had two punts of 60+ that went out of bounds inside the 2.

Although I'm not a Vol fan, I must admit That Chuck Webb"s entire season was the most dominating that I have seen since Herschel Walker. The 1990 Cotton Bowl was awesome, and I must give credit where credit is due.

Welcome to the board.

I still cringe every time I think of Hershel Walker putting his foot in Bill Bates chest.

I would vote for Washington's '01 game against LSU, but I can't believe no one has mentioned Al Wilson in the '98 Florida game: 12 tackles (9 solo,) a sack, 3 forced fumbles, and a pass deflection in maybe the most important game in modern UT history.

PM's 522 yards and 5 td's in '97 against UK.
Can you really count a game against a Hal Mumme team's defense?

I thought Manning's game against Arkansas that year was one of his best performances.

Travis Stephens had a several great games as did Peyton and Al Wilson but I think in 1997, Jamal Leiws' freshman year, over 200 rushing yards verse Georgia Bulldogs, averaged about 9 yards per carry.Being a freshman was awesome, a force to to dealt with in the future.Often overlooked are his pass receptions and I think he had 275 that same year.
