Most Obnoxious Fan Bases

As usual, you fail to grasp the fact that this really and truly is not ultimately about winning and losing per se. When Tennessee was on the short end of an 11-game losing streak to Alabama, I most certainly did not like ‘bama but I definitely respected them. I did so in part because Bear Bryant had a talent for complimenting his opponent (even if he had just beaten them 66-3) and belittling his own team’s strengths. There was no deliberate attempt to rub your vanquished opponent’s nose in his defeat. I found old-school Alabama fans to be of a similar mindset; they took victory in stride. They didn’t like Tennessee but they most certainly respected the history and tradition of that rivalry, not to mention the intensity with which that war was fought.

As great a coach as Spurrier was at Florida, he always struck me as a snide weasel, one who never wasted any opportunity to belittle a rival. Southern gentility seemed to have been lost on him, just as it seems to be utterly foreign to the behavioral repertoire of many, if not most, Florida fans. If Tennessee defeats rival X 45-7, I am not going to criticize, taunt or belittle their fans. I don’t think it is too much to ask that the favor be returned, even in the SEC which, as an anthropologist, I consider to be the last bastion of legalized intertribal warfare.

You state that “I don't go to UF road games to be ‘liked’ by our opponent's fans.” That’s fine and I doubt very seriously that you have anything to be worried about in that respect. If, however, you or your Reptilian brethren choose to conduct yourselves with the same self-absorbed, narcissistic, egocentric behavior which seems to epitomize Florida fans, a behavioral pattern that seems to be punctuated by the complete absence of even a shred of humility or grace, you will have demonstrated before God and all of humanity why your legions have earned the universal contempt of just about anybody who plays you with any degree of regularity. Any fan or analyst with even a modicum of objectivity has to respect what Florida has achieved on the football field. It is your attitude, your behavior, and your collective personality which we despise.

Get over yourself...my first meaningful encounter with a-hole Tennessee fans was in 1991 in Gainesville, who thought their $hit didn't stink because UT pounded UF by 42 the year before. A large group of your fans were chanting "45-3" walking down University Ave before the game started. Add in stories the year prior about the UT student section allegedly mocking the Gainesville murders, and you might begin to understand why some UF fans took it to the extreme when it came to you guys back then.

I'm in my 40s now, so I don't pay much attention to students acting like students at football games. But UT has its share of fools too, as evidenced by the "f*** You Florida!" chant during last year's game. Really classy....on national television no less....

I've been to every SEC venue as a rival fan except MSU, and you better believe UF hardly holds a monopoly on a-hole fans.

But whatever helps you sleep at night.....

The most obnoxious fan base is obviously the fan base that watches UT football and UK basketball.

The most obnoxious fan base is determined by your invidual experiences with a particular rival fan base.

For me, historically it's UGA. Worst fans ive encountered on a particular road trip were UK fans back in 2007.

It would be my deepest desire to find whoever threw said urine bombs, and end their miserable existence om this Earth. However, it would be near impossible yo find the culprits, so nothing significant could be done.

I have heard stories from a good friend of my Father's of the urine bombs being thrown on fans around them during a UT/UF game down there.

I don't blame you Mr. Visor. That urine throwing stuff is for the birds. People like that need to stay at home.

We all have idiots. I saw a few Cock fans taunting the Bama fans after we beat them this year. They were acting like we just straight up own Alabama. It makes me ashamed to be a Cock fan sometimes because of idiots like that.

Everybody from SC to UT to VU possesses idiots. Although, some have more than others.

it wasn't "allegedly". it happened.

Heard it was the Tuba players. Then the drum line.

1995 tuba player here. Bottles were thrown. I didn't sniff the liquid to see what was in it.

Ben Hill Griffin Stadium tops the list of places I will never go back to.

I never really thought much about the gators since the Vols didn't play them much before the realignment. After the change I remember reading in the Sunday paper the first time the Vols went down there to play that 50 or 60 gator fans were arrested for spitting on, throwing cokes on or throwing cups of piss on the Tennessee fans that were in the stands for the game. Have had a smoldering hatred for the average gator fan since then.

It was sad how apologetic the Gator Band and stadium staff had to be about the whole thing. The band members that brought us drinks during the heat of the game (only place that's ever happenned for us that I can remember) seemed as pissed at the fans as we were. Too many fanbases need to realize that you can have a rocking, loud, and intimidating stadium without resorting to name-calling and pissbottle-throwing.

I wasn't there in '90, and there's so many BS horror stories about road game experiences.

Fall 1990 was my last semester at UF (had to sneak in one more football season), and I remember the story being reported in both The Alligator and The Sun. I really think what some (not all) UT students' did that night in mocking the G'ville murders hurt more than the on field asskicking we got. It was a scary time to be a student at UF.

I really think this incident kick started the UF-UT rivalry...our students were out for blood the following year. That 1991 game was the night Florida Field morphed into The Swamp.

And I'll say this much...Tennessee's fans weren't exactly humble coming to Gainesville in '91.

They were as vocal as any visiting fan base I can remember back then....loud, proud and expecting another UT blowout.
