That game got me thinking. Who would you put on your Mount Rushmore of all time pro QBs?

Here's my 4.....in order.

Montana
Elway
Brady
Manning

In order:

Lincoln
Washington
Jefferson
T. Roosevelt

Honorable mention to Reagan, Polk, Franklin ( I know he wasn't POTUS, but still).

I pretty much agree with your 4, although I'll admit I've always thought Elway was overrated. I wouldn't complain if you were to switch out him with Marino, or maybe even Favre.

Elway carried mediocre teams to Super Bowls on multiple occasions. You can make a legitimate argument he's the best ever.

Montana
Elway
Unitas
Brady

How do you guys think your rankings would change if Brady had spend his career playing for Jim Mora, Tony Dungy, Jim Caldwell, and John Fox?

It is almost impossible to evaluate QBs in a void from the teams they play for. Which doesn't stop people from doing it.

You can't. Just as the original question is flawed. Quarterbacks have different strengths, organizations, and schemes. But if I were to play a what if question--Bruce Arians, Tom Moore, and Howie Mudd would find a way to make it work as they did for Manning.

I've always heard this, but:

1986 - 9th in yards surrendered, 15th in points surrendered
1987 - 9th in yards surrendered, 7th in points surrendered, 12th in rush yards
1989 - 3rd in yards surrendered, 1st in points surrendered, 6th in rush yards
1997 - 5th in yards surrendered, 6th in points surrendered, 4th in rush yards
1998 - 11th in yards surrendered, 8th in points surrendered, 2nd in rush yards

Maybe the '86 team would be considered mediocre.

I'm not talking about the teams in the 90's, they were very good. However, the teams in the 80's had nowhere near the talent as their competition. You just can't look at numbers. I'm mean other than Mark Jackson who was an elite skill position player. I'm being kind calling Jackson an elite player. Can you imagine what Elway could of done if he had the talent at his disposal that Jim Kelly had?

Tom Brady has spent his whole career playing for the best coach and the best organization in the league. He went down one year and they won ten games anyway with a backup. He's a great QB, but I don't know how the hell you can tease out exactly how great outside of that context. Granular rankings of QBs is impossible.

How does a team play a whole season and be 3rd in yards surrendered, 1st in points surrendered, and 6th in rushing yards without any talent or skill players other than the quarterback?

As did Montana when he played. The entire rankings system is subjective. I'm not going to compare the two because it has been done as such endlessly on this board and other places.

Did I say they didn't have any talent? Compare the rosters of the Broncos and their competition. Other than Jackson, Karl Mecklenburg, and Dennis Smith can you name me other elite players that Elway played with?

One word. Elway.

The power of Elway kept his otherwise crummy team at the top of the defensive and rushing rankings? Sounds like Verne Lundquist talking about Tebow.

EDIT: possible my sarcasm detector is off. If so, ignore.

So if a defense finishes at the top of the NFL rankings but doesn't have any Hall of Famers on it, they still suck anyway? Awesome.

Quit acting like a little baby. I never said they were bad. Show me one ******n post where I said they were bad. In comparison with their competition they weren't as good. Numbers aren't everything, ask Peyton.

You said that Elway took "mediocre teams" to the Super Bowl, yet his teams had excellent defenses and mostly good rushing attacks. How is a team with an excellent defense, a good running game, and a HOF quarterback "mediocre"? Now you're telling me that I'm "acting like a little baby" for pointing out that you're wrong. Great job.

Stat I just saw...Brady is 0-2 when his team surrenders 30 in the playoffs. Manning is 2-2.

People tend to forget it's a team sport when they talk about QBs and their playoff success.
