I trout fish here in the SC mountains. N, M, S Saluda, Eastatoe and Chattooga Rivers.

I never really though much about trout in SC. I'm sure they're out there though. I have a goal to catch a fish in every state. I need to get moving on it though. I'm only 5 deep now lol

That's just flat out impressive. I'm going to go out on a limb and guess those are private waters lol

No that one was caught in Helen! This kid lives and breathes trout fishing. I've caught a couple of good ones, but none like that.

Good grief! Yeah I haven't gotten into anything like that! But I do a lot of fishing/camping on the headwaters of the hooch just above Helen. This year I mostly floated the river below the lake though. Caught a mess of them but, for me, nothing beats catching them in the small creeks

I've been there many times. Caught a lot of small ones. You should try panther creek,, and the Sequoia. The sequoia has a few public spits that after a good rain the big trout was down from the private waters. Those folks keep them netted, but a good rain always washes a few over. I caught 3 5+ lbers last year in one hole. Hwy 197 in Clarksville its worth looking into. Lake seed also has big trout.

Well that's all the more impressive then! I'll keep my eye out for him. Seems I could learn a thing or two LOL.

I will have to try my luck a little further downstream next time I'm in Helen. I am usually further up the mountain, in the wma, looking for brookies

Well hot damn brother. Thanks for the info! I've fished Panther a few times with good luck. I'll have to find my way to the Sequoia this spring. I've been meaning to for a while

After a conversation with a friend last night about vacations, I'm just wondering about opinions. I was born and raised in the mountains (Kentucky), I live in the mountain area of Georgia, and I love them. However, I love the beach for vacation. I love the gulf in Florida around the Panama area. Just something about watching the ocean.

Joe, next time you go to gulf area, go
15 to 20 miles east on hwy 98 through Tyndall AFB. The first town you come to will be Mexico Beach. No rip tides, gorgeous beach, and away from the crowds of PCB. Condo's, motel/hotels, and beach houses for renting.

Lived there 3 years.

Grew up in the heart of Appalachia in Johnson City. Now on my second stint living in Virginia Beach. This time I live a half mile walk to the beach, right where the Atlantic meets the Chesapeake Bay. Love the views I get and the whole local (read: not the tourist section) beach scene, but I don't get homesick. Instead I get mountain sick. I have to get back to the Smokies every chance I can. It's where I find my peace. There's a solace I find there that can't be matched anywhere.

We actually stayed there 2 years ago and loved it. During the week of the 4th and had our pick of spots on the beach. We drove overto the ppeninsula a couple of times, and drove to st George island one day. It's close enough to Panama for a drive to restaurants or attractions. Thanks, I'd go back tomorrow! We've actually talked about it for next year.

AND if you could get onto Tyndall, they have some super beaches and a beautiful golf course right on the bay.

Can you visit there? I wondered last time if they had like an area for tourist. I'd live to take my kids.

There is a place about two or three miles east of the front gate that is/was open to the public. They had some bleachers set up so you could watch drones blast off. But to get on base, you have to have a sponsor.

Also on hwy 98, about 65 miles west of PCB and before Navarre, is Hurlburt Field (USAF SOCOM Base). Just inside the front gate are some historic aircraft for public view. I ended my career here and haven't been back for 10 years.

After you cross the bridge from San Destin into Ft. Walton on hwy 98, take the first right and travel appx 10 miles. You should see signs for a USAF Museum. It has all kinds of aircraft on display outside and in. I believe they also have an IMAX. Worth visiting while your in the area.

Yup. I'd much rather be standing in a small creek catching dinky trout than sitting in a boat.

Both. 6 months at one and 6 months at the other. Unless you have the option of living in Hawaii. Perfect if you hate cold weather as much as I do.

We live in the east TN mountains 9-10 months of the year. At the beach the rest of the time. We go shoulder seasons to the beach to avoid the tourists.

I think we are gonna try to go back this summer God willing. I've been talking to my wife since you mentioned this. Plus my parents are going with us for their first visit to Florida. I think knowing them, they'd like mexico beach better, more calm.
