I'm from Elizabethton and when I finished my hitch in the Army in 1976, going to California was on my list.I bought a pair of hiking boots,a good sleeping bag and backpack and started thumbing west...ended up in and loving San Diego and lived there through the 80's...but coming home to my moutains was easy.My mind set is more peacefull here than out west.I do miss sunset cliffs in OB...But we can go to the Covered Bridge with a bucket of KFC and not miss Cali at all...Go Vols!!!
I also moved from east TN to SoCal in the 70s. (Mis)spent years in the LA area and we have been in San Diego county for 30 years now. Its hard to beat San Diego for weather, especially in the winter and summer.
I think we have the best of both worlds: live in San Diego winter and summer, live in east TN spring and fall. Get to enjoy the east Tennessee mountains, fishing, and people in the spring and the mountains in color, Tennessee football, and great weather in the fall. Otherwise we hide from the muggy, buggy weather of summer and the cold, dreary winters in San Diego.
Welcome back to the hills! Hope your family finds a nice spot to settle down.
