Mullin was never contacted…

Mullen won 2 NC as an OC in Florida. Our AD is the same AD that recruited Mullen while at MSU. Tebow and Mullen are close friends. Essentially all the stars aligned. Mullen going to UT would make zero sense. Mullen "engaged" with UT just to up his price at UF. That is it.
Everyone agrees that Mullen clearly preferred Florida. That is not the point. Mullen was not Florida's first choice in 2017. Had Chip Kelly accepted the Florida job, Mullen would very likely be Tennessee's coach. This isn't speculation. Texts between John Currie and Dan Mullen from November of 2017 were made public a long time ago. You obviously didn't know that. You are talking out of your butt.

Mullen was contacted. But way too late as the next day UF offered him. If UT was at him earlier, he'd probably be the coach atm.

He was always going to wait on the Florida situation to sort itself out. That’s the job he wanted, he wasn’t accepting/agreeing to anything with Tennessee until the UF door had completely shut.

Disagree. Once UF offered him, of course he was gonna take it. But if UT offered him while UF flirted with Freeze and Kelly, I think he would of said "**** it, I'm not a top choice for you huh?" (Plus being overlooked their last search as well.) And took the UT job. Obviously we will never know the answer one way or another. Either way it woulda been nice to of made him a strong offer early. But you know, UT AD gonna UT AD

I assume that you meant Frost and not Freeze, as Hugh was unemployed and untouchable at that point.

Mullen held the Richardson kid out tonight so that he’d have him for Tennessee & rest of the season. Even losing to Bama today , everything is still in front of them. They’ll be very ready to play Saturday.
I’m expecting Richardson to have like 400+ yards passing/rushing.

Wait out Florida as long as money was similar. We should have made him the highest paid coach in the country. We weren’t gonna beat out Florida with equal offers. Out of all of our searches since Fulmer’s exit, I will always think the 2017 search was the one we royally F’d up by not going all out to get specifically him under Currie.

For bonus- i double down on that sentiment that we F’d it up by not getting Kiffin post Schiano once it was clear we were interviewing the likes of Doeren and Leach

Let me make sure I'm reading this thread correctly.
You guys are in here foaming at the mouth over Fla's coach?

Mullen had a way better talent and situation at Miss State than UT. At UT he was walking into a rebuild. The UF job would have to be a hard no and then we would have had to back up the dump truck full of money. Still would have been a maybe.

I dunno man. Mullen could have no doubt stayed in Starkville the rest of his career if he wanted to. Routine 7-5 or 8-4 finishes with an occasional great team once in a generation is about all that program can aspire to.

These coaches all deep down think they are Nick Saban 2.0 though. I don't mean his attitude, just that if they fell into the perfect situation they can win big every year.

I'm not saying if by some miracle we got Mullen in 2017 that he would even still be here. Honestly, he would have probably already bolted for another gig or the NFL. In the end, I think he will bolt UF for the NFL before much longer anyway

Heupel has been on the job 8 months. Mullen has a few years head start and came into a better situation than Heupel did. Attrition, turn over from the AD on down, and investigations can put your program sideways. We'll be fine, just give Heupel something to work with.

Yes, they certainly do have egos. Very few coaches get to a certain level and then just focus on getting better. Most seem to be looking for the next step. Rich Rod totally sold out for Michigan job when he could have stayed at WVU and retired a god.

Contacted about what? The head coaching job in November 2017? That’s categorically false, he had conversations with John Currie but was always going to wait and see how the search in Gainesville unfolded. Once Chip Kelly passed on the job and it was evident that Scott Frost wasn’t taking it, they turned their attention to Mullen.

You are correct that Mullen was contacted. That much was known during the FOIA requests. The other stuff is up for some level of debate. The week leading up the Egg Bowl, MSU was worried enough that word was going to leak out before/during the Egg Bowl that they had a contingency plan in case just in case they got a John L. Smith situation. We also went radio silent for almost 72 hours too to do due diligence on Schiano. By the time we reached back out after the Egg Bowl, UCLA had become a serious threat in the Chip Kelly sweepstakes and at that point, he waited it out.

So you're saying he never really had a shot to be our head football coach? We never contacted him?
