Could this actually happen? With the turmoil in Lexington right now, I could see it. The timing of it is interesting.

His buyout is $55 million. That is insane and nearly unimaginable to think anyone would pay.

He has what many consider his best recruiting class ever coming to UK next year. And that’s saying a lot considering the talent and #1 classes they’ve had.

I have my popcorn and Rupp Rafters ready for my evening entertainment.

The $55 million buyout figure is what Kentucky would have to pay Calipari if they fired him without cause. Texas would not have to pay that if they wanted to hire him. Honestly at this point Kentucky may just let him go for free. I still don’t think it’s likely, but the situation in Lexington is getting close to untenable, so never say never.

Cal should get out while he can, Kentucky only tolerates non-championship seasons for so long. He has had WAY too much talent to only have had one championship. If he knows what's good for him, he'll jump to a conference he can dominate for a little while.

Fair points but Texas is coming to the SEC.

I heard this rumor a couple days ago also. Calipari is about 65 if that means anything. I know he has been criticized a lot by the fans in Kentucky. Would like to see him go to Texas but not holding my breath.
Reading the Kentucky forum, the main fear is that he will take some recruits with him if he goes.

If he leaves on his own instead of being fired he apparently has no buy out: "The buyout Calipari would have owed UK for accepting another job expired in 2014. The new contract does not replace it with a new one, but it adds a clause instructing Calipari to notify the athletic director of “any offers of employment, employment opportunities or requests for meetings or discussions with respect to possible employment opportunities before engaging in substantive discussions regarding such employment or employment opportunities.” Kentucky basketball: The history of John Calipari's contract

I believe Richard G. West was the source of these rumors, FWIW. Cal's name was mentioned immediately after the Beard firing as a potential replacement, but this recent news, and the reported $11 million/year numbers KSR is reporting came directly from RG West. Journalistic integrity be damned.

I mean, Texas is one of the richest programs in the country.

I don’t think they’re worried about his buy out.

Isn’t Kentucky considered a better basketball job than almost any other basketball school. Kentucky, UNC, Kansas, UCLA….aren’t they basically the top basketball schools if you are a basketball coach? It’s basically a move to get away from the pressure of not winning championships at Kentucky?

Personally I want him at Kentucky as I am afraid they will land a better coach.

Texas has money but they’re not stupid. Why would anyone bail Ky out of their mess with this guy. It’s obvious he can’t coach what he recruits.

He should have at least 2 titles. I know it’s basketball but the John Wall team should have been a walkover champ

Who knows. Kentucky may be happy to get rid of him. In fact, I would like to see him remain where he is.

If Texas was not given permission to speak with Calipari or his agent, this sounds like it might be illegal…
