Iowa falls to 8-5. This (essentially redo of the canceled 2020 Music City Bowl) still marks the 12th straight season of making a bowl game for the Hawkeyes under Ferentz, however the Hawkeyes have now lost 3 out of their last 4 bowl game appearances.Iowa got off to a strong start scoring 21 points in the first quarter, however they were held to only a FG in the second half (a stand by Missouri at their own 9 yard line) and only 5 first downs the entire second half (the Hawkeyes didn’t pick up a single first down the entire fourth quarter).
The Hawkeyes will finish 8-5 for the second time in 3 seasons (having gone 26-14 over that timeframe). As such, Ferentz still remains 1 game short of tying Woody Hayes’ mark for most overall wins in Big 10 conference history (205).
On the other end, Missouri wins its 2nd straight bowl game, in a game ultimately won on a 4th quarter 56 yard FG. In a year of much higher initial expectations, the Tigers won 4 of their final 5 games (almost all 1-score games) to end the year at 10-3. For Missouri, this marks the 3rd time the program has had back-to-back 10+ win seasons (2nd time since they’ve done so since joining the SEC in 2012), the 7th time the program finished back-to-back seasons ranked in the polls (first time for them since 2013-2014), and the 8th time the Tigers have had a 10 or more win season (4 of those have come since joining the SEC in 2012).
Missouri’s hometown QB Brady Cook goes out in his last collegiate game winning bowl MVP honors (throwing 18/32 for 287 yards and 2 TDs while another 56 yards rushing before kneel downs…he finishes his college career 26-13 as a starter throwing for 9008 yards, 49 TDs, and 15 INTS, while also rushing 1209 yards and 20 TDs).
However, the Tigers’ defense should probably be the ones credited just as much if not more here: after allowing 21 points and 107 rushing yards in the first half, it buckled down and gave up just 6 first downs and 59 rushing yards in the second half (no first downs and 34 total yards in the 4th quarter) plus 2 sacks, an INT, and an impressive over-the-top stop on 4th and 1 to seal the game. Likewise, kicker Blake Craig drilling field goals of 51 and 56 yards in the 4th quarter.
Final Music City Bowl score: Iowa 24 Missouri 27.
Iowa falls to 8-5; Missouri moves to 10-3 to end the year and will be ranked likely somewhere in the 17-21 range (the AP and Coaches Polls had them at 23 and 20, respectively, entering the game; CFP rankings had them at 19).
