What instrument do you play?

How long have you been playing?

What is your set-up?

Favorite makes and models...songs to play?

I have been playing guitar for about 12 years, my main axe is a Fender American Fat Strat Texas Special.

Got a Line 6 Flextone II that I have begun to hate, I want a tube amp so bad just never get around to trading it in.

I also dabble on the bass from time to time and on the piano, novice at best though.

Favorite song to play is "Little Wing " by Hendrix, I seem to always find myslef playing it when I find time to pick the guitar up.

I can't play for crap yet but I have a guitar. Need to invest some more time in it. I have an epiphone Les Paul & a VOX avt30 amp.

Coming from a guy who is self taught, I suggest you try to play outside of your ability as often as possible.

Also, get a book of scales/chords and just fool around with them, you'd be surprised at what you can come up with.

I got apps & books that show the basic chords. I did spend some time on YouTube as well. Thinking about getting that ps3 game Rocksmith to mess around with. I'll probably invest in a few lessons as well. I feel like it would be a worthwhile hobby to learn & at least give a fair shake. Been dragging ass with it for about 3 years now though.

I've played the drums (self taught) on and off for almost 20 years. I have a Pearl 6 piece drum set disassembled in my Mom's basement, since I live in a 2 bedroom 1,200 sq. ft. condo.

I've played accoustic guitar (self taught) for about 10 years. I play a Takamine EAN40C.

Another guitar player, Schecter C-1 Elite and Vox Valvetronix 50 watt amp. Also have a Seagull acoustic. I don't play as much as I would like, electric isn't out here at school with me.

Also can play drums, kit at home is a POS but whatever.

What instrument do you play? I play bass

How long have you been playing? 12 years

What is your set-up? I have 5 basses. My favorite is a bass I had custom built, it is a telecaster bass model that is semi hollow body. Absolutely sleek and beautiful.

Other basses l, a samick artist series that looks like a black fender pbass with maple neck.

Also have an ibanez expressionist (96 model) that looks like a fender jazz bass.

Another is my 1990 Fender JP-90 bass

Lastly, I have a Waterstone Skelly bass which looks like a rickenbacker. I have a bass endorsement with Waterstone (Nashville based boutique brand)

As far as gear. I have a 4x10 ampeg cabinet as well as an SWR cab with 1x12 and 1x10 in it. For heads, I have a solid state ampeg SVT 350, retolexed in white...and an ampeg SVT 300 watt tube head. Pedal wise, I use a Sansamp bass driver.

Other "notable" basses that I've had over years...

2008 rickenbacker
1992 musician stingray (why did I sell this?!?)

Favorite makes and models...songs to play?
Ampeg for amps...As for bass guitars, I dig US FENDER pbass the most. Gibson makes a great product but the basses are too heavy. I like 10lbs or less...hence why I cloned my own custom 50s era tele bass. That thing weighs 7lbs!

I have thought long and hard about trading in all of my gear for a Martin...not sure I can ever get rid of my Strat though, I truly love that guitar.

Had to sell my Gibson Les Paul Studio a few years back and I regret that almost daily.

Watched a documentary on the history of the guitar the other day, very cool show...it has renewed my love for the instrument, gonna try to play more.

Been in three bands over the years, played half a dozen or so gigs a year. Haven't been in any bands in the last few years though.

My electric is a Samick RL-3. I used a Fender blacktop head I picked up for $40, rebuilt and put in some Rooski groove tubes, a 2x12 cab I built myself with Celestion V30's, a line6 podxt live, boss rc-20 looper and a line 6 dl4 delay. Only have the guitar and the podxt live out of that bunch.

The guitar is alright, I put in some Duncan humbuckers, forget the model. It's a semi-hollow body, definitely on the heavy side at about 10 lbs, tone is meh but I was pretty effects-heavy anyhow. I liked the look and the action is about the fastest of anything I've played this side of a total axe.

Acoustic is an electric Dillion EF900EM, folk sized, 12 gauge elixirs, cherry sunburst flamed maple top and a vine pattern fake pearl inlay. Guitar sounds great, very loud mid tones, great for folk style. Electric bits sound like crap though, so it's only seen an amp twice.

It's very sad that I'm not a good musician. Almost everybody in my large family is very musically talented. I'm the music appreciator. I've been playing guitar since I was 12, but I'm no good. I prefer Fenders.

It's all good. As long as you play something at any level to the point of being able to truly appreciate good music, that's all you need.

Fender Stratocaster American Deluxe (Sunburst).

Been playing off and on for about 12 years.

Not a lot of time to devote to it anymore, but still enjoy picking around on my Washburn acoustic.

I'm a composer of orchestral-oriented music. I have a Bachelor of Music in composition and am currently working on my Master's. I'm greatly influenced by French impressionism and Eastern European and Russian composers from the 19th century and forward. (Stravinsky, Bartok, Prokofiev).

I've also been playing guitar and singing for 8 years as well as playing piano for the past 3 years.

Not a bad investment, those are decent guitars.

My kids prevent me from dedicating as much time as I'd like too.

At least I've got something to teach them, hopefully they can run with it.

I wish I could play guitar, I bought one for HS graduation and thought I could teach myself I was wrong. I've been wanting to learn but I don't think I got what it takes.

I've played the piano since I was 6.

Accompanied the choruses in high school and college. Played in church and have played weddings.

I don't play as much as I used to, but I go in spurts where I play a lot.

The intial wall that a self-taught player has to get through is difficult, in the end, if you really wanted to learn how to play you could do it.

I'm self-taught, I got a guitar when I was 15 and Metallica's Black Album tab book..." Enter Sandman " was the first song I ever learned to play.

Like most things in life, you get out what you put in.

I've always wished to be a really good piano player, bought a cheap keyboard years ago and still dable from time to time.

I started learning to play off Superunknown.

I know a handful of solid self-taught guitarists, but I would highly recommend lessons and at some point, if for nothing else than it forces you to broaden your horizons, as well as at least attempting to learn sight reading just for the appreciation.

Of the guys that I know who are solid guitarists and those who are really, really damn good, the disparate thread tends to be musical literacy.

I was lucky enough to get into a soundcheck of Prince's a few years back. He was pretty loose and asked if there were any guitar players in the crowd of maybe 100 people.

He let people come up and play his guitar with his band. Anybody that wanted to.

Here is where this becomes relevant. Although I can play guitar pretty well, he would tell each person to play in the key of "C" or whatever. I didn't go up because I had no idea how to play in a certain key.

Don't laugh if you know music. I sorely wished I had taken some music lessons or guitar lessons prior to that moment.
