Musk wants to build spaceships

Elon Musk's Starship design is fascinating because it is reminiscent of a NASA concept from the early 60's known as Sea Dragon. Just like Starship, that rocket was going to be made out of rolls of stainless steel welded together. However, it was going to be launched underwater. Here's a nice depiction of what that would've been like:

This was going to be a gigantic rocket, making the Saturn V look small in comparison. Here's a nice graphic comparing the scale of all 3 and SLS rockets:

I mean.. You could just load the whole car on a trailer and pull it behind your pickup.
Dat Gum genius! You Audi guys are sharp.

My BMW X6 purchase fell through. Looking at Q5s now. What do you like/dislike about your'n?

Wonder what the point of an underwater launch was? Can you imagine the environmentalists freaking out over that?

Won't someone think of the Manatees?

The user interface for the android auto is a little finicky, and the connection between the phone can happen though wi-fi, bluetooth or USB. I can use the handsfree calling but I can't figure out how to listen to messages. My wifes ford explorer and the infotainment system is way more intuitive. I thought I'd use the qi phone charger all the time but i don't because it's under the arm rest, kind of a pita. I'm getting about 23.5 mpg in town, which is more than i thought i would. I had a seven passenger infiniti qx60 before and wanted something smaller and faster and man this thing is like a rocketship. It's nimble and the fit and finish is superb. I bought a premium plus loaner that had about 6,700 miles on it and save about $10k. I wanted the Presige with heads up display but they were on back order in the color I wanted plus it would have been new and not the discounted loaner. Figured I'd let someone else break it in and suffer the depreciation... I'm really pleased with it so far, would buy again.

I thought about the BMW and looked at the Mercedes but wasn't ready for the optics of that quite yet.

The only other issue is that I can get my clubs into the back but not two sets... First world problems...

It was an attempt to reduce costs and allow for construction of a gigantic rocket that could deliver a huge payload to LEO. The rocket could be manufactured out at sea and would be "easier" since the segments of the rocket could be floated out and assembled at sea. Also, it theoretically could be positioned closer to the equator to reduce the amount of fuel needed to get to orbit.

However, it never happened. Primarily because of how impractical such a design would be because the rocket would have to be able withstand the pressure from the waves and sea. Also, in hindsight, you would actually need extra fuel to exit the ocean because of the increased density of water as opposed to air. I would imagine it would be extremely dangerous to fuel up due to the transients not only fueling the rocket, but also exerted on it from waves.

Very impractical design, but it is fascinating to look at the ideas NASA came up with at that time. Aspects of it weren't a bad idea, such as the stainless steel construction.

I read where Tesla has improved the $/Kwh efficiency of the batteries so much that they can be profitable without the subsidies, none of the other EV car makers are remotely close to getting down to $100/kwh. The 100/kwh is where the battery reaches parity with gasoline engines without subsidies. I just bought a new car (Q5) and though I looked at ev's, my next one will almost certainly be one.
So Musk has the sweatshop battery buisness cornered with kids digging up cobalt, nickel, and manganese in Africa to keep the price down?

No, he bought a company called Maxwell for it's ultracapacitor intellectual property and tech and used it to springboard alsong side Teslas.

Also, spare me the indignation of your perceived exploitation by musk. You don't have to answer but do you use an iphone?

So who is digging up the metals for the batteries again? I already know but would like you to answer.

No iphone. I enjoy freedom to do whatever I like with my programs, files, and folders.

You've confused me with someone who cares about the source of the mined materials.

We gotta speed up space travel I know I’m not expecting us to hit Warp drive or light speed but we need to find some means of a faster fuel source so we can get to Mars quicker than 6 months and other places in our galaxy.
Physics is physics...

The Orion drive would've gotten us much faster.

Except for that pesky radioactive waste lol.

Cause sooner or later after we completely destroy this planet we will have to find another one to live on.

Are you serious? Your doomsday attitude is laughable. We aren’t fit for interstellar travel and we likely will never possess the resources to colonize other worlds. We need to focus on us on this planet.
