Musty Smell in Basement Apartment

This is probly right. I told the guy I like the apartment, but I would need some kind of trial period(a month) to see if I could remove or live with the smell. He said no then got angry with me. So I feel like theres a red flag there.

Definite red flag to me. I'd look elsewhere, personally

We move into a rental yeas ago that had a similar smell but not as bad. Just smelled like an old house. The problem was there was mold under the bathroom floor and we didn't find out until after our son was almost put in the hospital. (There were no leaks just from standing moisture from under the house) We had to bring a breathing machine home for him. He lost a bunch of weight and looked like he was getting very ill. Found the issue 10 days before Christmas and it took me 2 days to move after that. Never try to deal with mold.

There's a reason it's available. Slum lords don't care about your health, they care about your money. Plenty of other places to live. You're most likely not the first person to turn it down.

After he got I angry - I would have said screw you and left for good

He knows there is an issue. The previous tenant probably got ill and moved out over the conditions.

I'd look elsewhere. Good luck!
