UTAD,

I've been a hardcore volunteer fan my entire life. The University of Tennessee and its football program are dear to my heart. Unfortunately, the last few years have been extremely tough for Vols fans. Fulmer's time had passed, Kiffin was a disaster, and Dooley just couldn't get the job done. Mr. Cheek and Mr. Hart had the responsibility of making what could be the most pivotal hire in Tennessee football history. The program desperately needed a hire to unite a weary beat down fan base. Our brand has been tarnished. The seats aren't being filled. Fans have grown restless.

With the news today of the hiring of Butch Jones, I will not be purchasing season tickets this year. I am thoroughly disappointed and downright disgusted at our universities leadership with this hire. Vol fans will not blindly fill seats, purchase merchandise, and support a program that does not care about its fan base. The lack of organization and communication associated with this coaching search was embarrassing. With all due respect to Mr. Jones, he is not the person to unite and lead this football program back to prominence. This is a very sad and dark era in a once proud football program.

Earnestly,
A sick and tired of being sick and tired Vol fan.

And I am sure they will read this and be deeply saddened that they lost a "fan" and I use that term loosely

I second the OPs thoughts. I usually make it up to a few games a year. Just not doing it next year. I still love the vols, but I'm spending my time and money elsewhere.

At least its a concise email, which I'm sure will be a pleasant surprise compared to the other drivel they will be receiving.

Feel better? I am a due hard vol fan. Do I wish we could have made a better hire? Of course. I don't have the money for season tickets. But I will damn sure be at every vol football game I can and support our coach and our players 100%. I don't see how anyone that calls themselves a fan can just say I'm not a fan anymore. I scheduled around watching the Kentucky gane this year. I bleed orange and I will always be a Vfl and support my vols no matter what.

Does not making a donation and not buying season tickets equate to not being a fan? I will always be a Vol fan, but that doesn't mean I have to support an administration that is driving this program into the ground.

The knee-jerk reactions and petulant whining on this site are astounding. At least wait to see what Coach Jones puts together before you write him off, for crying out loud.

Some people happily accept whatever they are given. The sheep will follow to the very end, even as they go over the cliff.

We are allowed to be unhappy, we are not obliged to blindly follow poorly made decisions that drastically impact the team we love. Even loyalists should be pissed, they don't care how we feel. The administration is a damn joke, as is Jones.

Don't lose your faith Grudenites. I have heard from reliable sources that this is all still part of Hart's plan to announce the Gruden hire. Butch Jones is being paid a nice sum of cash by UT to take the job for a few weeks and then step down for undisclosed reasons. At this point, MNF will be over and Gruden will come to the rescue and be announced as our next head coach. Cinci will then rehire Jones after Hart sends them a nice donation. This was done bc Hart knew the fan base was getting restless so he needed a stopgap for a few weeks...that stopgap is Jones. In the meantime, Vic Grider is on the recruiting trail and letting out recruits know what is really up. Hart is a genius and it will be epic the way this will all play out!

I'm not getting rid of my tickets, but I don't think the OP should be mocked or derided or labeled a bad fan. At the end of the day, the only vote anyone outside the administration and board of trustees has on the direction of the program and university is their wallet. If you continue to buy tickets and donate when you don't like the direction, you've silenced yourself. This won't make the same splash as a booster canceling a Sky Box buy, but it does matter.

TheVol Tihts isn't any less of a fan for this attitude, and he's not wasting his time. He's sending the only rationale, lawful message that has any chance of being heard about Tennessee's downward spiral. It might not be heard by this A.D., but Hamilton and Dooley have both been fired for empty seats. That trend's going to continue the emptier the seats get. If Butch doesn't get it done, the TheVol Tihts email will speak volumes even from the trash can.

If you are a long-time donor and you send a polite, sincere email like that, you will get a response from the university. If you are an annual giver, you will probably get a phone call. It's a way to have your voice heard, and UT will try to keep your donations intact. People who say it doesn't work or won't matter either aren't donors or haven't tried it.

Not that it matters what I think or feel..

But I am shocked that so many people are at one another's throats over who is a true fan or not. I think it was Boro who said this is a democracy and choosing to support it by donating time and money (or not) is the only way to get any message across to the powers that be.? (If it wasn't Boro I apologize).

I for one a in a family who have held tickets and made donations for over 30 years. We have stood in the freezing cold, the rain, and the heat to cheer on the Vols. We never leave before the last tick of the clock and Neyland on game day is like church for all of us. However, we are also a hard working blue collar family, and now have added a new born child to the mix. That being said we have decided to pull our money out of Knoxville for the time being. I refuse to spend my hard earned money in support of a program who blatantly has no respect or regards for the excellence this historic program once exemplified...or for that matter the hopes and expectations of its fans.

You can't expect me to believe that NO ONE wanted this job when every single media outlet in America noted that it was the best one to be had among those available.

Now coach Jones may win..and I hope he does. But when you compare this hire to even the recent hire made by Arkansas it's almost as if we're purposefully regressing.

Spam away and call me what you like. I've never posted a negative thing about this program anywhere, but I refuse to be in line with what is happening to this (what will soon be "EX") top 10 program.
