My hero

I just agree with keeping their private lives private. Not that I agree with anything Weiner did, but I believe keeping the public out of public figures personal lives.

When you run for office and want to represent my City/County/State/Country, your personal life is public because you represent not only yourself, but an entire city/county/state/country.

What about their pant size? Do you need to know that? How many times have they jerked it in the last week? That's important information.

This drives me nuts. We destroy the careers of good politicians for things that don't matter (like what they do in their personal lives) and excuse bad politicians for using moral rhetoric (they are probably porking on the side, too) that we approve of. It's so stupid. Ben Franklin might have porked more than the Kennedys. I'm certain I'd vote for him over Huckabee.

And I'm not talking about Weiner. Mark Sanford comes to mind.

Just curious, Are you a homeowner?

I dont want people who represent my community making a fool of themselves and my community, by smoking crack, hanging with prostitutes or felons, etc, etc.

"From June 18 until June 24, 2009, the whereabouts of Governor Sanford were unknown to the public, including to his wife and the State Law Enforcement Division, which provides security for him, garnering nationwide news coverage. Lieutenant Governor André Bauer announced that he could not "take lightly that his staff has not had communication with him for more than four days, and that no one, including his own family, knows his whereabouts."

Before his disappearance, Governor Sanford told his staff that he would be hiking on the Appalachian Trail and while he was gone he did not answer 15 cell phone calls from his chief of staff Scott English; he also failed to call his family on Father's Day".

Dude says that he will be hiking the Appalachian Trail and goes AWOL for 6 days and it is nobody's business?

I could care less as long as they make good decisions for the country. Many a politician has proven over the course of history that they can make terrible personal decisions, yet be a brilliant statesman.

No. I'll own a home when I can buy one outright. A mortgage is not the American dream, IMO.

I don't want any of that either. I don't think crack and prostitution should be illegal, but since they are illegal I don't want my congressman doing that either (rule of law). But Sanford's career was ended over an Argentine rendezvous with a mistress (which he immediately owned). No cover-up. To me that is insane. That's business as usual for the Kennedys. Sanford didn't have politics that the media, nor the left, nor the main street right had any interest in protecting.

First of all, why can't he disappear for a few days? Second, I'm not so concerned that people made it their business as I am concerned that he was ousted over it.

The guy was AWOL while his state was having a major forest fire. Imagine you plunking down cash on a nice piece of property only to have it burned up while your Governor was MIA and getting his freak on in a foreign country. That wouldnt upset you at all? Because obviously he cares so much about you and your property

What is the governor going to do about my house? Was he going to fight the fire? Were they waiting on him for permission to fight the fire? Even a governor should be able to get 6 days off. I wish every politician would take more time off. There used to be a day when congressmen spent just a couple weeks out of the year in DC. Now they are there year-round doing their duty (AKA spending America into oblivion).

What does this have to do with the price of tea in China? Politicians are blackmailed and bribed everyday over all sorts of things, and the vast majority of it is legal and funded through lobbies and campaign money.

I couldn't agree more. Until the legalized blackmail of special interest groups is eliminated, the blackmail argument in this case doesn't hold water. More politicians are influenced, bought, and paid for by this form of legalized bribery/blackmail than any compromising photo ever dreamed.

Because it can work. It doesn't have to make sense to you or me. It doesn't have to sound right to us. It only has to work.

COULD NOT POSSIBLY agree more... but you do not ignore one bad thing because another goes on.

Moreover, I do not trust people who violate serious commitments like marriage. If they'll lie to their wife who they supposedly love then they'll most certainly hose me... who they could care less about. And NO, I do not accept the low bar of saying "they all do it so there's no reason to oppose it". We'll get what we're getting until we reject it.

Trust and integrity are the foundations for leadership.

Seems to me that the issues are taxes and spending, not private life. Of course, it is easier to remove someone for "scandalous behavior" and claim that it somehow effects their job than to convince the electorate to radically change the federal tax laws.
I am not delusional enough to believe Weiner's district will somehow see the light now and elect a thorough going libertarian. The issue with these character problems is that we will continue to get dishonest people who lie and screw us over until we demand honesty and integrity that is a consistent pattern of behavior for them in all aspects of life. Liars tend to lie. Those with honor tend to behave honorably. Situations change... character does not.

Way to discard principles when calling someone out for violating your notion of ethical principles...

What on earth are you talking about?

When someone positions themselves as my moral superior then THEY have climbed the pedestal. I'll be glad to ignore his idiocy if he and those like him get their greedy little fingers out of my wallet and their busybody noses out of my life as I exercise my rights and freedoms.
