How bout we get rid of Mike Hamilton....I don't think Pearl is anywhere close to being out of the woods yet....and yes it is a sad day for Vols fans....these last few years have been rough

I've seen Indiana tossed around as a comparison (oh, right, it was Katz on Sportscenter) since they supposedly lied to the NCAA as well. Asking because I can't remember, did Indiana's punishments have anything to do with them hiring Sampson right after he got punished by the NCAA for his actions at Oklahoma? Or was it strictly how they handled the situation after the fact, and the violations themselves?

It always seemed like Indiana were asking for it hiring Sampson with that timing, but maybe it wasn't a factor.

Anyways, for that reason, I don't think it's a good comparison given what we know.

I believe it was because they hired him and he continued doing exactly what he was doing before. The AA took the stance that you hired a known cheater and he got caught again.

The funny thing is that I honestly have a hard time caring about extra phone calls...and wouldn't care at all, really, if the NCAA didn't care. It's the 1) shadiness to get around the rule and 2) the lying about the shadiness that really bites.

A part of me hopes that the reason the athletic department came down so hard on Pearl and company was because they didn't want thought it would minimize the chances of being slapped with lack of institutional control. I would like to think that faced with the prospects of concurrent investigations into both programs and the admission of lying by Pearl, that the athletic department slammed basketball in order to show authority and hope that the 'AA disregards the secondary violations of football as being just a Kiffin thing (particularly since they were self-reported).

However, that's a lot of hoping. I can't shake the feeling that we'll all be hanging our heads even lower when the full story emerges.

I certainly don't want the most successful five years of UT history followed by a Todd Raleigh-like hire.

On another note, I've never included assistants in my many arguments in support of Pearl with good reason. They just don't do a whole lot for me. Now might be a good time to cut the fat, although I doubt it will happen.

Some good nuggets in this thread...

Pearl is nothing like Sampson 2, not even as bad as Sampson 1.

Hamilton protected the University from the worst sanctions by hitting Bruce and the assistants hard...

Anyone who thinks Bruce bought the cell phones or was one of the primary users of the cell phones is an idiot.

I agree, I highly doubt Pearl was a frequent caller on the throw away phones. However, the NCAA won't give a damn if it was Pearl or an equipment manager using the phone, if it was used to call recruits.
