Didn't get home until 2 am. My voice is still not completely back. Neyland Stadium kept trying to come to life in the 1st half, but our offense kept killing it. But the General came alive in the 2nd half, especially in the 4th quarter, once the team gave us a reason. Thoughts:

-Yes, it was ugly. Yes, that's 2 games in a row in which Tennessee didn't play well. This might just be who Tennessee is. But there's also a chance this offense will improve and this elite defense keeps playing elite. I saw some sparks at the end last night. Rolling the pocket for Nico worked (as an aside...I was calling for that in the 1st Q. Not sure why it took so long. We have a struggling Oline and a QB who is struggling to go through progressions. Rolling the pocket a) helps the Oline, and b) cuts the field in half for the QB. This is how Kiffin got Crompton on track in 2009. Then, once defenses have to worry about the rollout....and let's face it Nico's legs give defenses far mnore to worry about than Cormpton's legs...that slows down their pass rush when we do drop straight back. Anyway, glad we started rolling the pocket). Maybe Heard comes along (he has ability). Maybe Nico grows in his reads. I've seen it happen. Crompton in 2009. Milroe last year. Jayden Daniels in 2022....QBs who looked kinda average by midseason can (and have) grow into good QBs in the later parts of the season. Especially 1st year starters.

-But we got a win over Florida. By my count, that's the 9th win over Florida since Spurrier arrived in 1990. So I don't care what the rest of y'all do...I'm going to enjoy it. It's rare.

-Interestingly, I never felt the weight of "the curse" during that game. I know that sounds like a weird thing to say, given how much we struggled to beat a 14.5 point underdog, but in past years, it felt like, "oh man, here we go against Florida again." This year, Florida didn't play out of their minds. It felt like the focus was on our own team and own struggles and the opponent wasn't really a consideration. Maybe others didn't feel that way. But in the stands, it never felt like "the weight of the Florida game" was on us. We just needed to get it together on offense and eventually did. We didn't let psyche stop us from doing what we had to do to win a close game. Instead, it was Tennessee who snatched victory from the jaws of defeat. In past years, it was Florida. We were mentally tough, even if we lacked in execution for much of the game.

-Ricky Gibson and Jermod McCoy are the best CB pair we've had since Fair/Goodrich. McCoy has been talked about all year, but Rickey Gibson was an absolute stud last night. The Martinez criticism needs to stop. He finally got some dudes with SEC ability and he's developed them. Just as he developed Hadden, Theo Jackson, and Alontae Taylor.

-Back to Nico. In the stands, you could really see that he's not seeing open guys. At one point, Bru was wide open for a deep TD. The entire stadium started yelling to throw it to him. He ended up hitting Nimrod on an intermediate route for about 20. There were other instances when he didn't see guys, including Brazzell on the INT (which he stared down). He also missed 2 or 3 deep throws that were open with inaccurate throws. The long throw to Brazzell that was out of bounds would have iced the game. Brazzell made a great catch, but the throw needed to be more in bounds for him to land in bounds. These are the things he needs to clean up. I believe he will. But the good thing is, our WRs are getting open. It's not them or the play-calling (much as fans want to criticize play-calling because they don't know what else to criticize).

-Dylan Sampson is a warrior. I don't know how else to say it. He has 15 TDs on the year. I think the SEC record in 20. He could shatter that. With a good OL, he's a Heisman frontrunner.

-The Pili injury sucks. I'm pretty sure he's done for the year. But as injury prone as he's been his whole career, I thought this might happen. The good news is, Telander is good. He played well. And since he'll start at MLB next year regardless, he's going to get more development for next year. Arion Carter looks like an NFL LB. Best UT LB since Mayo, IMO. He's gone after next year. Perry and Jalen Smith have acquitted themselves well for depth...I wish Spillman would get healthy, but I don't know what his injury is.

-James Pearce is coming around. He was wrecking some plays in there. Norman-Lott was a beast.

-I love having a kicker who feels automatic. It's been awhile since we've had one like Gilbert.

-Did Florida have a live ball penalty called against them last night? There was an obvious clip right in front of the ref on their punt return that led to their final TD. That was about a 30 yard swing. Meanwhile, we're getting called for some absurd holds and phantom illegal man downfield penalties (not last night). I saw a few holds they could have called on Florida and didn't. I know there was one live ball penalty called on Arkansas and Oklahoma COMBINED. This is ridiculous. The SEC office needs to be put on blast.

-I'm not predicting Tennessee to beat Alabama. But I'm not saying we can't beat them, either. Every game is different. I'm excited to see how this team grows the rest of the season...it's certainly not a finished product. In the meantime, I'm going to enjoy a rare victory over the team I hate more than any other.

Let me add this about Florida....they're not a bad team. They suffered a blowout loss at home to a top 5 Miami team week 1 and it sort of created a narrative that they're terrible. Week 1 games can be misleading, though. Their 2 prior losses were to Miami and aTm, who, it turns out, is a good team.

I don't know how severe the Mertz injury is (or the RB, Johnson), so those could hamper them. But if injuries don't derail their season, they absolutely have a chance again LSU, Kentucky, and Ole Miss, all of which are in the swamp. They should beat Florida State. They might actually make a bowl game. And I'll say this...those kids are still playing hard for Napier. That doesn't look like a team that thinks its coach is a dead man walking. That speaks well of Napier.

The uncalled clip was deference between winning in regulation and ot. No excuse because it was in wide open for everyone to see!!
And what about when Nico dove for the first down when he scrambled around the right edge on third down toward the end of the game but they didn’t review it nor even show the replay. We ended up taking a delay and punting. That could have iced the game.

I plan on doing a similar review as I would like to go back a rewatch the game and what Nico is seeing coverage wise versus our WR and their ability to get open.

I will say I do like Gibson and I think McCoy is an absolute stud at corner. Seems Banks has no issue with him playing man all the time and is a good change of pace having corners able to play man. A little concerned with safety play however.

Heupel will have to revamp the offense a little bit to bring it down to what our O line play is and how Nico is seeing the field. Hopefully I’ll have more to come later.

Agreed. They are not playing like a defeated team. They are not a great team and they do not look like their talent composite, but they are developing some players in key positions.

If it the play along the sideline, he did step out of bounds before he reached the first down marker.

Totally agree. There's only so bad Florida can ever be because there's just too much in-state talent for them to not get their share of it, no matter who's coaching. That being said, by all accounts, Napier's a standup guy who is trying to change a really broken culture. He's just not a good coach, and he had clock management/timeout/game decision blunders as usual. He's basically football Buzz Peterson.

As a supporter of the Heuple hire from the start (I have the receipts), I hate to feed into any negativity that the Legions of the Miserable have trademarked, but one thing I do want Heuple to stop are the bad fourth down decisions in huge games. He panicked last year against Bama and went for it deep in our territory. But going for it inside our 20 in such a tight game yesterday was just an awful decision. We converted, but that doesn’t make the decision good.

I'm gonna throw in one observation. We all complain (justifiably) about holding penalties being called on us and not on our opponents. However, the penalties can't be called if we're not doing it. Rightly or wrongly, the refs are likely looking for it because we've got a rep of obviously holding. I know it's hard in the heat of play sometimes, but we need to be more disciplined. Same with false starts.

I was about to have a heart attack when that was called.

I’ll admit I was in full “here we go again” mode for a good bit of the game until the very end when Florida didn’t go for the two point conversion and certainly when they shanked the FG in OT. Heck of a win.

Agreed on Nico and I’m a little surprised it hasn’t been part of the plan earlier than the second half last night. Glad they went to it and hopefully it’s here to stay for a while.

Napier doesn’t know what he doesn’t know in terms of game management, play calling, situational decision-making, etc. I’d list examples just from the TN game but it would take a week. He is a decent man with a good family. I don’t want them humiliated or embarrassed, that’s a crappy part of all this. But he needs to gently go away.

Even Muschamp and McElwain win that game yesterday, and Mullen would have won it by multiple scores. Florida just can’t accept a coach who can’t handle the basics of gameday coaching.

I read it all and agree with everything Nighthawk said. I never felt despair inside Neyland, aside from my legs and back aching terribly from being sandwiched between 4 other full grown men. 😅

Saturday was my first game in attendance this season. I have a much greater appreciation for what’s going on with the passing game. Some plays are slow developing, but the deep ball has been available. You just can’t see it on tv because they want you to see what’s in the ball carrier’s teeth every play.

The holding on us and never on our SEC opponent is puzzling. Our “home” media has failed us in not talking about this more. Our coaching staff needs to be petitioning the SEC for an answer. We would cover the spread against Arkansas and Florida if the officiating was even for/ against each team. The holding has killed many drives for our offense this season.

Emotions run high in rival games. Nico with a good amount of coaching has a high chance of being something special for tenner.

He is making high school mistakes in year one.. he is a freshmen.

Even saban had issues with freshmen quarter backs at times.

Give him time.

Not only that but the fake injuries.

Something has to be done about this. It deflates the offense in such a way it is hard to recover at times.

After watching the replay, I have a few more thoughts and recollections.

-Nimrod had a bad game. The drop at the end of regulation might’ve kept UT from winning in regulation. He’s usually sure-handed, but wasn’t against Florida.

-Squirrel had a better game than I realized. I’m glad he was on the field last night or we might not win.

-Why was Thornton not healthy enough to play the whole game until overtime and then he was not only healthy enough to play in OT, but to get a crucial target and first down?

-Christian Charles had a really good game. He’s had an unfortunate career so far with injuries and playing out of position. He’s clearly a safety and not a corner. But man, he has looked good the last couple of games when given the opportunity.

-That might have been the worst our punting game has been under Heupel. We rarely ever give up return yardage, and our punter normally pins them with no return. Both the punter and the kick coverage weren’t up to par.

-Pearce made his presence felt. He was constantly in the backfield. I wish he would finish some plays when he whiffs on the QB, but he’s getting home and flushing the QB or RB to others to finish.

Did they ever show a replay? If he did, he did, but I at least wanted to see it. Or maybe I just missed them showing it.
they did not show it on the broadcast
I don't know if it's available anywhere else or not
I don't know why they didn't even look at it

Can’t worry about anyone’s feelings when someone gives them twenty something $million to go work elsewhere.
