Here is my take on the upcoming coaching search since I'm fairly certain the decision has been made, whether Dooley knows it or not. For the record, my top choice would be Swinney, but as I said, probably not gonna happen.

Also, let me know who you think should be the next coach realistically, so no Gruden, Manning, etc.

And other than Gruden, it's Patterson for me. And Strong.

Gary Patterson and Charlie Strong would be my top choices, but I think Tennessee gets neither.

My thing with Patterson is that he has been so frequently tied to the Arkansas job that I'm not sure we could outpay the Razorbacks if it came down to it. Also, Patterson has turned down so many offers, I'm not sure he would leave anyway. Still, that's a hire that would make me happy.

Patterson, Petersen, Petrino....Petrino is the most likely of the 3

Peterson isn't likely to happen right before they move to the Big East. I would absolutely freak out if we hired Petrino. I would suddenly find myself rooting for a coach to fail. He is such a cancer for programs, I wouldn't touch him. We need stability, and Petrino can't provide it.

Patterson, Petersen, Mullen, Strong, or Davis are all fine to me.

Patterson likely ends up in Little Rock.
Mullen probably stays at MSU.
Strong likely costs too much for his resume.
Petersen is unlikely to leave the West Coast.
Davis would be the most likely candidate I guess.

Kentucky has already said they aren't interested in him. If he then came to Tennessee after being eschewed by Kentucky...I mean, what can you say about that?

Maybe it's just me, but Butch Davis seems like he's a risk. Things were clearly out of hand at North Carolina, and I'm not convinced that many of those problems wouldn't follow him. Maybe that's just me, though.

I think Butch Davis like a Calipari, except not as successful on the field. He might get you turned around quickly but leaves a big wake in terms of rules violations.

I have been having a lot of fun in the Butch Davis thread. Funny thing I keep finding articles on the web about Butch being cleared of all wrongdoing. I saw a poll where 94% of UNC fans felt firing him was the wrong thing to do. Most stunning is people credit him for cleaning up the Miami program ( I know , I know). Butch is a defensive coach and he can recruit. A defensive guru for a HC is my preference.

I just posted a message in there too. Completely agree about having a defensive guy as a head coach. Just not him.

I'm fine with a defensive guy (but as previously stated, I want Swinney). I'm not sure about Butch though. I do think he would be willing to take the job if it were offered to him; I'm just concerned that the NCAA will be sniffing around the program more than usual.

Fair enough. Things happened on his watch . Convince us about Swinney. Many jokes in recruiting forum about Clem$on.

I like Swinney's fire, he knows how to motivate his team. But you have to admit his defense is awful too this year. They just out score everybody they play. Seems really similar to us except they only have one loss. I just wonder if he could make it in the SEC. Oh yea, he's also from "Alabama".

And not a single investigated allegation. Oh, and for those who talk about money being paid for Nkemdiche, apparently it wasn't enough since he's now a former Clemson commit. The reality was that several of his teammates committed to Clemson and he jumped on board. A bunch of sour grapes doesn't equate to recruiting violations.

Couldn't possibly care less about the ties to Bama. As for the defense, they just adopted Brent Venables defense this year. Also, much of their starting defense falls into the sophomore category. Given another year or two, the defense should be clicking on all cylinders. Venables was successful at Oklahoma and should be anywhere he lands.

Explain how Petrino is a cancer...He has been successful everywhere he's been...He built up a Louisville program that was a wreck...He did leave the Falcons job but who knows the situation there and he built up Arkansas to top 10 status...How is that being a cancer??...Yes he got caught having an affair but damn don't be a hypocrite because MANY men and woman have affairs everyday...Your father or mother or brother or wife may have cheated in the past, the difference is He got caught...But IF that has happened to you or if you did that and got caught didn't you forgive them over time?...Or them you?...Of course you did....If the guy wants a little poontang let him have it as long as he wins football games....After all, That is what he would be hired to do....Anyways I would support him as coach even tho I don't see it happening.

Aside from allegations, why Swinney?

Explain how Petrino is a cancer? Really?

In 2006, he signed a 10-year contract extension to stay at Louisville. Said he would stay there. Then left for Atlanta. Straight up left the team with 3 weeks left in the season. Goes to Arkansas and completely derails their program after a motorcycle wreck/affair/improper hire of girlfriend. Keep in mind, the last of those 3 things is why he was fired. He hired that chick without going through the proper channels.
