... and South Korea returns fire and deploys fighter jets. Is it about to get ugly in the far east? I hope China and Japan steps in here and helps resolves this. But, really, isn't it inevitable? That lunatic in N. Korea is just looking for a reason to use those nukes.

Seoul, South Korea (CNN) -- North Korea fired artillery toward its tense western sea border with South Korea on Tuesday, killing at least one South Korean soldier, the Yonhap news agency reported.

Two civilians and 13 other South Korean military personnel were injured, with three of the soldiers seriously hurt, Yonhap said.

A Ministry of Defense spokesman contradicted the Yonhap report, saying that no deaths had been confirmed and that the military was checking on possible civilian casualties.

At least 200 rounds of artillery hit an inhabited South Korean island in the Yellow Sea after the North started firing about 2:30 p.m. local time, Yonhap said.

South Korea's military responded with 80 rounds of artillery and deployed fighter jets to counter the fire, the report said

Concerning the long-term handling of this, anyways. It seems like there's no good solution to simply make them go away.

I have a feeling China will come in and cool things down. If crap really hits the fan, the last thing they want is the US getting seriously involved with hostilities.

That said, everytime I hear about things like this and then think back to all the "Iraq was a threat" talk I get pissed. When it comes to WMDs, the trifecta used to be N. Korea, Iran, and Iraq....and we beat up the kid that couldn't tie his own shoes.

Just Kim's semi annual "look at me" moment. Nothing to see here, if anything was going to happen it'd be well underway.

I hope you are correct. This has potential to get ugly as it always does when dealing with a megalomaniac such as Kim Jong Il. He is dying; what would he care to start another war? It's not like he has a strong desire to protect and provide for his people. One day, South Korea is going to get fed up with its soldiers/sailors being killed as a result of this psycho's attention grabbing stunts and do something about it. I couldn't blame them either. We would do the same if in their position.

The ROK won't do anything with NK's big brother next door. The situation on the peninsula is a thorn in their side, but in the grand scheme of things I don't think they are particularly concerned.

I can imagine right now there is a nuke sub off the coast of Korea waiting for the go if any indication NK is getting ready to launch a nuke. NK knows this and China knows this.

N. Korea has done similar things quite frequently. Just looks at the timeline, and a history of "aggressive" action presents.

NK will be appeased.

They make requests for aid in odd ways, but it works for them.

"This is an intentional provocation to heighten cross-border tensions," Dongguk University professor Kim Yong-Hyun told AFP.

Kim said the North would try to use the clash to promote solidarity among its people during the leadership succession.

Yea, just another way to tell "his" people that today there was a "great battle" against the South, but due to NK's strength and overall awesomeness, and the scared mentality of the South and their backers (us), they remain "protected."

Just another news reel so KJI say can see, you need me and my family for protection. We make everything great. Without us, SK will come here and then things will really suck.

I promise you NK is telling their people SK started this via their little maneuvers.

Of course, a calculated move by Kim and his cronies, with no flow of outside information into the country, they eat it up.

If they meant to start a war they'd have picked another target and not stopped after a few rounds.

I recommend the National Geographic special show "Inside North Korea" for those who haven't seen it, it's pretty neat.

NK is so stockholm'd that even MiB's flashy thingy wouldn't deprogram that country.

Too me this is just Kim's son trying to show the military he has the balls to take over as leader. This is concerning but for now I'm not that concerned about this, like someone said they do stuff like this all the time to get more promises of aid and other benefits.

Don't worry, the UNited Nothing will be on top of it. They will condem South Korea.
