Leach did not play football, right?

I think I remember this being a trivia question during one of his games.

Holtz was mentioned, but I think he played. I think Urban Cryer is who the OP was looking for, but not the only good choice.

some guy named lyle jones never played either.

edit....i thought we were talking division I. but, it was clearly no football at all.

so, these two don't fit the bill.

Just checked and I was right about Leach; here's also some more:

Leach is atypical among NCAA Division I head football coaches in that he did not play football at the college level. He was one of only six such coaches, with Paul Johnson at Georgia Tech, David Cutcliffe at Duke, George O'Leary at UCF, Bobby Hauck at UNLV, and Charlie Weis at Kansas.

So Mike Leach, Paul Johnson, David Cutcliffe, George O'Leary, Bobby Hauck, and Charlie Weiss (as far as current coaches go)

Ferris State? Where he met his wife. Nice try though. Not major college football but played/on team for a couple years.

Unless you were talking about his dad

Charlie Weis? ding ding ding

no, wait...you said successful :)

He's got a Super Bowl ring. Albeit as an OC, but I would say that makes him pretty successful. His record was better at ND than Kelley's is for the same time in the job. It's not his fault ND gave him the farm after a few big wins his first year there

I was thinking Mack Brown, but he played a short time at Vandy before transferring to Florida State when he got hurt. I had to look it up

The more you know
