I'd say that about sums it up... Still tough, but not elite. And one hell of a home field advantage.in my travels to big 10, big 12 and the pac 10 areas, we are seen as a has been team. when i say i'm a tennessee fan, the usual response is, they used to be pretty good. in ohio and michigan they refer to us as having the cooper curse. i think orange empire can relate to what i'm saying, in big ten country they have no respect for us at all. in most cases we are not seen as a elite program no more.
That isn't true, Buckeyes here do respect us... They may be incredibly annoying as a whole, but other than yahoo, we have gotten respect. People here picked us to win the SEC, and still recognize us as a real team, with a real chance to win the SEC next year. (although most will be thinking gators now.) Champy, do you think your negative posting is going to get Fulmer fired or something... Seriously, this is getting old.
Plus, they love our fight song.
I live much closer to OSU than you do...where do you live champ. i lived 20 miles south of toledo for 20+ years and i talk from experience. when you mention tennessee football they pretty much just laugh. woody and BO are god up there and that is that. OSU fans are the worst they think tennessee is about a DIV 2 school. my michigan freinds don't say much because we put a beat down on them in 2001 and i have that hanging over there them. i lived in phoenix for 2 years and everybody i talked to said the samething. tennessee used to be a powerhouse. not tennessee is a powerhouse. they all love USC. point is most of the country doesn't see us as a powerhouse or a elite team. it is simple, because we are not. if you do talk to most buckeye fans they will tell you fulmer should have been fired by now, that the reason i always hear the cooper curse joke. thats the one thing i can't figure out about most tennessee fans. you consider us elite powerhouse and we haven't won the sec since 98. i guess your definition of elite differs from most of the country. its not negative posting champ when it is the truth.![]()
I can safely tell you that folks that are Notre Dame, Ohio State, Michigan fans all look at us as a power. Other fans around the country that I have ran into including quite a few in Illinois all think that we used to be a super power, but have fallen on hard times recently.
The respect level is definately still there. Most people always say that they have heard that going to a UT game is one of the best experiences in college football.
I have attended a ton of college football games and there are two places that have the greateast atmosphere on game days...Tennessee and Notre Dame..after that, its Michigan.
Bottom line is this, we are NOT an elite program right now.
