NC Game Thread: Clemson (14-0) vs Alabama (13-1), 8:30 pm ESPN

Dabo saying his team has to have a chance to catch the ball on an onside kick. What the hell is he talking about? Is Bama supposed to just stand there until Clemson decides they want to go after the ball?

They can call fair catch if there's a guy there...I think he's possibly misinterpreting that.

So...

Alabama was a "kick 6"/"Miracle on the Plains" and one quarter against Tim Tebow away from having a chance to have won like 6 titles in 8 years.

And a playoff game (/matchup) away from it being a chance at a likely 7 national titles in 8 years.

Yikes...just yikes.

Saban is GOAT. Bama is the best college football team ever. No end in sight of their dominance. Sad but true.

Right before bama executed its perfect onside kick, I thought to myself, you know, now would be the perfect time to do it. I in no way expected them to do it, but clemson's narrow kick return formation made it easy for the pink elephants.

Clemson had an excellent football team--could have won the game--but they simply gave up too many big plays in the second half. It is doubly unfortunate because they otherwise played good defense. They'd have sacks, tackles for losses, good play generally--and then give up a huge TD-scoring play. You can't do it. They also missed a big opportunity in the 3rd quarter when they had a 3 point lead and the ball on bama's 40 or so and ended up punting. That was big. But you can't give up that many big plays and win a game. Too bad as I was pulling for the tigers.

1. Play to win. Don't play not to lose. - Nick Saban is as conservative a coach as they come yet with the game tied 24-24 in the 4th quarter he went for an onside kick that changed the game. That was a classic play to win move rather than trying not to lose. Butch needs to take that to heart.

2. Don't be afraid to play talented freshmen - Did you hear how many times Kirk Herbstreit or Chris Fowler mentioned a big play being made and said the player was a freshmen? Whether it was Renfrow for Clemson catching 2 TDs. Calvin Ridley for Alabama setting up Henry's second TD. Ronnie Harrison breaking up that sure TD pass for Watson in the end zone. Christian Wilkins blowing up Alabama's line. Minkah Fitzpatrick making plays. Marlon Humphrey catching that onside kick and so on. All over the field and for both teams freshmen made big plays. I hope Butch realizes talent is greater than experience and he shouldn't be afraid to play talented youngsters like Darrin Kirkland Jr. over less talented veterans like Colton Jumper next year.

3. Trust your QB - Whether it was Saban or Dabo, they both put the game in their QBs hands tonight. Butch for some reason doesn't trust Josh to win games. Josh may never be what Watson is but he's proven he can play at a high level when we faced huge deficits at South Carolina and vs Georgia and had no choice but to scrap the gameplan and let him try to win the game for us. I'd love for Butch to let Josh loose in a game without having to be down by 14+ points.

Dabo was pissed because he still had his trick play in his pocket and got blindsided.

Some sour grapes there. I can't rely blame him though. Clemson played its guts out and looked to be the better team. It has to be disappointing for them. They were 1 injury or stopping a TE away from a national title.

I'm confused... Didn't you say not too long ago that Watson couldn't hold a candle to Dobbs (my interpretation, not your exact words)???

I trust Dobbs with running but certainly not throwing at this point.

Clemson was the more explosive team, but Bama played with more discipline and that was the difference.

2 turnovers for Clemson vs 0 for Alabama
2 Blown coverages on Howard leading to scores
2 Special teams miscues with the onside kick and allowed kick return TD

On, and on and on....
