You consider UVA and UNC blue bloods?
Unc still appeals to kids from North Carolina add in the fact his father is an alum and brother played basketball there, then it obviously runs in his family. Mack brown was successful at unc before because he kept the talented in state kids from leaving amd was welcomed with open arms to any high school he so pleased.

Looking toward 2021, January will be an important month for the next class, as Tennessee will look to start to really shape its board. Quarterback is a key spot, especially with uncertainty with what might happen in the room post-spring. While Drake Mayeremains committed to Alabama, Chris Weinke has worked hard to keep Tennessee in the mix there and be ready to pounce on a potential flip opportunity. If Maye sticks or flips to UNC, Christian Veilleuxcould become a prime target, but for now, the Vols haven’t gone all in on the Maryland native. Also the Vols could look at Michigan commitment J.J. McCarthy as Weinke also has a good relationship there.

Sounds like this kid is #1 QB target for 2021.

The UNC appeal is not nearly as prevalent as it used to be especially in the Charlotte and Triangle areas. We have so many people moving in that aren’t UNC fans. That’s why Clemson, UGA, UF, FSU, SC, Oregon and others have done well. Vols really need to get back in there. Helton screwed the pooch big time by passing on Howell who wanted to be a Vol. We win at least 9 games this season with him and maybe another. And are setting really good at QB going into next season.

I’m glad we ended up with Bailey. I’m not saying you aren’t, but between the two, I think we got the better QB and I think it’ll pay off as well..just like it has for NC this season and the future. We both ended up with future stars (hopefully Bailey will be).

I hope you are right and very good points. The question is does he come in and start right away like Howell did and have that kind of impact. And I know the SEC is much much tougher. That has to be factored in as well.

Tell that to NC high school kids with money.

I work at a Charlotte suburban high school and UNC is literally everyone's dream school.

UNC does a great job supporting & accepting instate kids. It’s very difficult to get in UNC from outta state. Thus the school has very loyal following of those in NC. I worked for Jeff-Pilot for 12 years and practically everyone at that company were UNC supporters even if they never went to school there.

Tennessee’s Administration has taken the opposite approach in the last 10 years. Instate kids need a very high GPA (3.5 or better) & high test scores. Otherwise the place be given to outta state or out of country kids. I know more kids from my sons 2009 graduating class from a Nashville private school that attended Alabama, Ole Miss & Auburn than Tennessee. I hope Randy Boyd changes more to the UNC model.

Maye’s could be interesting. AP & Jesse both didn’t deny flip possibilities. Sounds like they’re going to catch up with him tomorrow and should have some intel fwiw.

I wouldn't say UNC does a great job supporting instate kids - but they do a great job of making sure there is broad representation in their student body from the entire state. In fact they stack the process. UNC clusters high schools in order to limit over-saturation of admissions from certain schools/or school systems - this is done to ensure a broader representation from the entire state - otherwise schools from Charlotte, Triad and Triangle regions - who have more academic resources - would disproportionately dominate admissions. This obviously doesn't impact athletes directly and wouldn't be an issue in Maye's case. But, NC see's a lot of great students go out of state because of this process. Additionally, keep in mind that the UNC system has 17 different campus (UNC, Charlotte, NCSU, App State, ECU, etc.) which gives in state kids lots of options. So to your comment - UNC (if you mean UNC Chapel Hill) is very exclusive in admissions even to in-state students - I know kids with a 4.0 and 1300 on the SAT that didn't get in. I'm not sure you want to model that at UT.

As for Alabama, Ole Miss and Auburn - they are really struggling to maintain enrollment given their in-state college age population has been declining for years - all 3 have become very, very aggressive out of state and some years are admitting more than half of their freshman population from out of state.

Some of this is demographics in the respective states. NC is one of the fastest growing states in the country. AL & MS are not. So its probably better to aspire to the UNC model than be in desperation mode like AL & MS. But need to balance the objectives here.

Living in and around the Charlotte area my entire life kids “love” Carolina, Duke, or otherwise because mom or dad love the school.

I could think we can lay that decision on butchy boy. We took his boy away from Rutgers instead.

I think Jones intentionally passed on Lawrence and Howell so that JG wouldnt have any competition at Tennessee......
