Some of the writers for the subscription site for NC State is saying a 5pm announcement and it is possibly Mark Gottfried. No verification yet but that is the chatter.

Upgrade from Lowe but proves how no major coach wants to grind it out with their fan base and the two shades of blue 25 miles away.

When NC State's search started, all the scuttlebutt was that NC State was going to be willing to spend heavily to get a winner -- just like many fans expected Tennessee to. Maybe money doesn't buy quite what fans think it does.

Interesting to compare their approach vs. UT. State plays in premier bball conference, 2 NCs in their history and the boosters were willing to spend money. The AD came out and said they would go after only a proven coach. As a result they had to wait till after the tourney.

Backed up a brinks truck to rick barnes, sean miller and as a last resort shaka smart. All 3 said no. by this time, most good candidates were taken. Gottfried was the best they could get.

My question is who played their cards better - hammy or yao?

As much as it pains me to say it, I think hammy.

I remembered seeing this email on Twitter from Debbie Yow:

Dear Wolfpack Family,

I am writing to share with you the status of the search for our new head coach for men's basketball. There have been telephone conversations with successful coaches that did not develop into meetings -- sometimes because we did not wish to pursue those coaches further and sometimes because the coach involved is happy where he is.

The conversations have been candid. We have not tried to sugarcoat the challenge of rebuilding our basketball program. Our absence for 5 consecutive years from the NCAA Tournament was noted by each coach as evidence that the program is in poor shape and will require a special effort to rebuild. Finding a coach with the fight and fire to do this job has been a challenge.

That said, we will find an excellent college coach who shares the vision of what State Basketball can become and is up for the challenge. I realize there are multiple rumors surfacing about the nature of the search on websites and in newspapers.

Once our new coach is hired, I will be in a position to bring perspective to a number of those rumors. But, right now, we need to remain focused on finding a talented collegiate coach who is a fighter, full of confidence and appreciation for the opportunity to lead our basketball program back to national prominence. That will happen in spite of those who believe this cannot occur.

Wolfpack Basketball is destined for a revival. We will accept no less. Please keep the faith while we continue the search. Your emails and text messages of support have meant everything to me.

I am blessed to be your AD.

In the Spirit of the Pack,

Debbie

She was also rumored to be contacted when we hired Hamilton.

This has got to be fairly depressing to be NC State.

On the bright side, if McBee and CCM don't work out together, he should have a safe landing spot in Raleigh if Gottfried's color analysis of him is taken into consideration.

Left town right as they were announcing it. Didnt get a chance to hear the fan reaction but I imagine it can't be good. Their expectations were more absurd than vol fan.

Nothing short of the truth but surprised she would infuriate the fan base and feed the media with that comment.

It is a done deal...most likely Yow was waiting until she got turned down by all her first choices. The letter that went to boosters and alum last night was rumored to be bracing them for this announcement!

All of my employees are Wolfpack alum...as bad as we think it has been to suffer through these last few years as Vol fans, it must truly SUCK to be a State fan!

I must say that we did better than Missouri and State in BB hires!

Conversation with NC State grad in office 15 minutes ago -

Me - What do you think of the new hire?

Him - So the rumors are true?

Me - Gottfried?

Him - Yes, that one.

Me - That would be it.

Him - Sh*t.

I think that sums up the collective base of NC State fans.

They paid Parker 90k to find them a quality coach. Even they found that monumentally challenging. Debbie Yow found a coach who was was at the the end of his buyout money. I am sure she had him pocketed from the beginning as a backup plan.

If Hamilton said something like that publicly, this message board would be on fire with all the natives shrieking about what a shiatty job Hamilton was doing selling the Tennessee brand.
