Jeff Goodman was quite clear in his interview on the DP show this morning. There are two problems with NC State.

1. Debbie Yow has a reputation so bad that no big name coach will go near that program.
2. The fan base is an absolute animal house that no big name coach will go near.

True about the fan base, to a point. They put Herb Sendek in a situation where he was forced to leave, and he had them in the tournament every year.

But State fans have a right to be upset about the state of affairs, and Sidney was a disaster almost from word go. I actually think Gottfried is a solid hire, given that he still has something to prove, is an upgrade over Lowe (who isn't?), and better than Smart.

And hey. He ain't Frank Haith.

Yow is, at heart, a redneck who will drop the gloves and her professional demeanor when she believes she is being personally f'd with.

I've lived around Raleigh for 20 years, and I know tons of NC State fans. I've been to many of their games. NC State's fanbase is no worse than anyone else's. They just want to have a winner, like anyone else.

The problem isn't that Duke and UNC are just down the road. Duke and UNC have always been just down the road, but that didn't keep NC State from being just as good until 1990. Since then, they've repeatedly shot themselves in the foot. The latest bullet was hiring Debbie Yow out of sentiment toward her sister, who was a beloved women's coach for the Wolfpack until she died of cancer. For what that's worth, they would have done better to hire Bob Valvano. At least he hasn't proven he would be incompetent.

Gottfried isn't going to last there, either. He'll bring in the talent, but just like at Bama, he won't be able to coach it.
