NC State fires Kevin Keatts

Ncst has been simply horrible this year. Don't blame them a bit. It's one thing to lose games, but to not be competitive is ---grounds for dismissal.

That run last year was one of the greatest rabbit out of the hat acts of all-time. They were fully intending on firing him after the ACC Tournament last year.

They did get lucky by getting to face Oakland in the second round of the NCAAT (who almost beat them), but the 3 other teams they beat were really good teams. Plus they beat Duke and UNC in the NCAAT just to get there. Beating Duke twice in 2 weeks, in tournament play, is just insane given the regular season they had. I still can't believe they pulled that off.

Kevin Keatts was a banked in 25 foot prayer away from being fired vs UVA last year in the ACC tournament. And then they suddenly went blackout and everything good happened for them .

For those who want to relive the magic of the Wolfpacks 2024 final 4 run, there is a documentary that is debuting tonight on the ACC Network.

That's a good point. He in all likelihood needed to go all the way in the ACCT to save his job, not just make a run.

Hell, I bet he would have been fired if they didn't make it out of the first weekend of the NCAAT. Even if they beat Texas Tech, the loss to Oakland (even though they had just upset UK) could be spun as "This is ridiculous; it was a great run he just went on but he still lost to a 14 seed in the first weekend."

I think you’re right . He’s been very inconsistent, to the point where a Final 4 trip wasn’t enough equity to get him through this season. It’s too bad, because he’s one of the better guys in the sport. Hopefully he’ll land at a spot that he wants to, or gets a TV gig on ESPN or the ACCN.

I know that coaches are going to stick up for coaches, but anybody baffled at his firing is just ignoring his first 6 seasons there. He was below .500 in ACC play and the conference is nowhere near as good as it used to be.

Even better it came after a missed FT; McKneely hits the FT for Virginia and it's over.

It was the most un-Tony Bennett ending to a UVA game. His teams are typically very disciplined. I think they are also fouled a State player shooting a tough 3 .
His tenure overall at UVA had the most unexpected ending to it. After they won the title in 2019, I would have never believed someone who told me that would be his last win in a NCAAT game.

There was no tournament the next year, got bounced in the first game in 2021, 2022, and 2023, and missed the tournament in 2022.

Weren’t they also the first #1 seed to lose to a 16 in 2018? UMBC beat them by 20 or something. He’s a very good coach, a better guy, but his postseason success was pretty up and down.

His basketball style was basically the equivalent of running 3 yards and a cloud of dust in football. They’d play really good defense and then just grind you down. But if you could get up early on them, they’re weren’t really built to score in bunches. Wasn’t there 1 game, where UVA didn’t score for almost an entire hour ? They showed the stat, “last UVA fg was at 8:53pm” and it was 9:45 or something wild.

Yep. I have no feelings positive or negative towards him or UVA, but I was glad they ended up winning the title the very next year. The only way for him to not be known only as "the coach who was the first #1 that lost to a #16" was to win it all eventually, and he did it the very next season. Especially since he ended up retiring fairly young.
